EMILIO JACINTO’S PARENTS

• According to historians, his mother was a midwife. Meanwhile,

the work of his father was not the same on the presentation of
the two historians.

• According to Epifanio de Los Santos, Mariano was a merchant

and another biography tells that he is a book-keeper.
EDUCATION
• Jacinto studied at San Juan de Letran and took Bachelor of Arts and
later transferred to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) to study law.

• In 1896, as the tension becomes evident between the Spaniards and

Filipinos, Jacinto stopped his studies and joined the secret society called
“Katipunan” at the age of 19 years old.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• The Kartilya ng Katipunan is a document penned to serve as the basis for each of the
Katipunan. This 14-part decalogue is written by Emilio Jacinto, along with other
works depicting their revolutionary movement. Out of admiration and fascination
with this literary text, Andres Bonifacio established Jacinto’s “Kartilya” as the
official code of conduct of their underground movement, believing that its teachings
greatly reflect the honor of the revolutionary.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• It is originally written in Tagalog and it served as a guide and

• According to most published records, initiation for new members of the

revolutionary groups. No one knows the exact date when “Kartilya” was
authored, but it can be assumed that it is in the late 1800s as it is when
revolutionary literary pieces were most prominent.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• The Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng

Bayan, also known as Katipunan or KKK was established on July
7,1892, the same day when Rizal was deported at Dapitan,
Zamboanga. Before the Katipunan was formed, propagandists, or the
reformist composed of the educated middle-class who were able to go to
Europe, existed and was said to be the inspiration of the Katipunan.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• The Propaganda movement, being the inspiration of KKK, aims for

reform for legal rights or equal rights for the Filipinos on the Spanish
government. Their stand is, if ever the Philippines will be a province of
Spain, there must be a representative on the Spanish Cortes. Part of the
reformation is the secularization of parishes.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• Reformists said that not only the Spanish priests or prayle should have a
religious order and a parish. There must also be a Filipino secular
priest.

• However, looking at the main goal of the propagandists, why did they
choose to move for a reformation rather than a revolution?
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• Apparently, during the Spanish colonization, propagandists could not

immediately move for independence because they know that the Spanish
government would not grant it. The reformation was the “Plan A” for
the propagandists because revolution would be too drastic and radical.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• During the 1870s to 1890s, the Spanish government then obviously signified that it
was unwilling to reform its policies. Two main events that led to the age of
enlightenment of Filipinos was the death of GOMBURZA and Jose Rizal.

• GOMBURZA are three catholic priests that were killed and accused of mutiny by
the Spanish. They fought for equal rights among the priest and leading a campaign
against the Spaniards causing the hatred of Spanish authorities to them.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• The execution of GOMBURZA effect on many Filipinos especially Jose Rizal. Later
on, Jose Rizal wrote a novel entitled “El Filibusterismo” which he dedicated to the
priest.

• Jose Rizal wrote “Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo” to enlighten Filipinos

and fight for their rights against the Spanish government. He is one of the prominent
reformists and a member of La Solidaridad, a group of Filipinos in Spain who wants
to fight to have a representative of the Philippines in Cortes Generales.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• After the spread of Rizal’s work, the Spanish government captured even
before he landed in Philippine and executed him for a crime of rebellion.

• The news broke out, many Filipinos were against it and because of Rizal’s
work and many Filipinos were inspired and enlightened to fight for their
rights on their land and they created a group against the Spaniards. It is
where Kartilya ng Katipunan was made and started.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

• Grasping on the movement of the propagandists, it can be concluded that

a reformation is already a failure after the death of GOMBURZA and
most importantly the death of Rizal which led to the formation of a
revolutionary group, the Katipunan.

• Instead of fighting for reformation, the Katipunan’s goal is the

independence of their fellowmen.
In 1894, when Emilio Jacinto joined the movement, a notable event that time is
Age of Enlightenment existed in Europe after the French Revolution (1879). The
same time when the Century of Philosophy and the Age of Reason existed where
Immanuel Kant spread his wisdom (Dare to know! Have the courage to use
your intelligence) became the inspiration of the reformists like Jose Rizal and
Graciano Lopez Jaena and the rest of the middle-class Filipino men were able to
standby in Europe.
It can be traced back from their works that mostly tackles about liberty,

equality, and fraternity. These three upholding was based on the

revolutionary movement of King Louis XVI during the French Revolution.

Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto, being influenced by the works of the

reformists in Europe, reflected on their ideals and goals for independence

also have a resemblance to the revolutionary plan in Europe.

The Kartilya of Katipunan was then formulated by Emilio
Jacinto through his wide knowledge and inspiration on Noli
Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, the French Revolution, and the
evident situation of Filipinos under the Spaniards.

KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

makamandag.

The life that is not consecrated to a lofty and reasonable purpose is a tree

without a shade, if not a poisonous weed.

To do good for personal gain and not for its own sake is not virtue.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

It is rational to be charitable and love one’s fellow creature, and to adjust

one’s conduct, acts and words to what is in itself reasonable.

Whether our skin be black or white, we are all born equal: superiority in knowledge, wealth and

beauty are to be understood, but not superiority by nature.

KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

The honorable man prefers honor to personal gain; the scoundrel, gain to

honor.

6. Sa taong may hiya, salita’y panunumpa.

To the honorable man, his word is sacred.

KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN
7. Huwag mong sayangin ang panahun: ang yamang nawala’y

mangyayaring magbalik; ngunit panahung nagdaan na’y di na muli pang

magdadaan.

Do not waste thy time: wealth can be recovered but not time lost.

8. Ipagtanggol mo ang inaapi; kabakahin ang umaapi.

Defend the oppressed and fight the oppressor before the law or in the field.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

The prudent man is sparing in words and faithful in keeping secrets.

On the thorny path of life, man is the guide of woman and the children, and if the guide leads

to the precipice, those whom he guides will also go there.

KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

kun di isang katuang atkaramay sa mga kahirapan nitong kabuhayan;

Thou must not look upon woman as a mere plaything, but as a faithful

companion who will share with thee the penalties of life; her (physical)

weakness will increase thy interest in her and she will remind thee of the

mother who bore thee and reared thee.

KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

What thou dost not desire done unto thy wife, children, brothers and sisters,

that do not unto the wife, children, brothers and sisters of thy neighbor.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN
sariling wika, yaon may magandang asal, may isang pangungusap, may dangal at puri;
yaon di nagpapaapi’t di nakikiapi; yaong marunong magdamdam at marunong
lumingap sa bayang tinubuan.
Man is not worth more because he is a king, because his nose is aquiline, and his
color white, not because he is a *priest, a servant of God, nor because of the high
prerogative that he enjoys upon earth, but he is worth most who is a man of proven and
real value, who does good, keeps his words, is worthy and honest; he who does not oppress
nor consent to being oppressed, he who loves and cherishes his fatherland, though he be
born in the wilderness and know no tongue but his own.
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

When these rules of conduct shall be known to all, the longed-for sun of Liberty shall rise
brilliant over this most unhappy portion of the globe and its rays shall diffuse everlasting joy
among the confederated brethren of the same rays, the lives of those who have gone before,
the fatigues and the well-paid sufferings will remain. If he who desires to enter (the
Katipunan) has informed himself of all this and believes he will be able to perform what will
be his duties, he may fill out the application for admission.
