¿WHAT IS BIOMASS?
 Energy through biomass is basically using organic matter as an energy source. This organic
matter is heterogeneous. They can range from agricultural waste (olive bones, nutshells,
remnants of vine pruning ...) to wood remains, such as pellets or sawdust.
 It is a type of energy production that is cheaper, renewable and with fewer emissions due to its
combustion. In addition, it helps keep forests clean so it helps in fire prevention.
¿HOW IS BIOMASS CONCERNED?

 Boilers are used where the material burns little by little, which also generates ashes that can be
used later as fertilizer. If an accumulator is installed, the excess heat generated can be stored.
 It is used to generate heat and industrially electricity although it is a very time consuming
process
TYPES OF BIOMASS
 The biomass considered renewable energy is formed in 4 types which are the following:
Natural biomass
 Natural biomass is that which is generated in natural ecosystems, without any intervention by the human being.
Firewood or branches are an example of this type of biomass. The problem is that the intensive exploitation of this
resource does not respect the protection of the environment, so we would no longer be talking about a type of
renewable and ecological fuel.
Residual biomass
 The residual biomass is that which is generated from activities that man carries out, such as agricultural, livestock,
wood or agri-food industry. Their disposal is sometimes a problem, so turning this waste into a resource to create a
sustainable fuel is a very good option
Agricultural surpluses
 Agricultural surpluses that, for various reasons, are not used for human consumption, can be used as fuel in power
generation plants and also as biofuels.
Energy crops
 These are crops exclusively dedicated to energy production. Some traditional crops such as cereals or sugarcane can
be part of energy crops, as well as less common ones such as cynara, flask or sweet sorghum
ADVANTAGES OF USING BIOMASS ENERGY
 It is a renewable energy
 Theoretically it is an inexhaustible fuel source.
 It is little polluting.
 Alcohols and other fuels produced from biomass are very efficient.
 It is available worldwide.
 It is extremely cheap and its ashes are not very aggressive for the environment.
 It generates little corrosion in the equipment used as boilers, ovens, etc.
DISADVANTAGES OF USING BIOMASS ENERGY
 The misuse of biomass can promote deforestation of forests and destruction of natural habitats.
 Liquid biofuels contribute to the formation of acid rain.
 There are still difficulties in maintaining the transport and storage of solid biomass.
 This is one of the many news about
biomass that we decided to present to
class.
