BIOMASS TO

ENERGY
Importance of biomass and energy
OVERVIEW

• What is Biomass?
• History
• Types of biomass
• How do we get energy from biomass?
• Advantages and Disadvantages of biomass energy
What is Biomass?
• Biomass is made up of living things. This
include any plants or animal materials.
• These biomass materials absorbed a
chemical energy naturally from the sun.
• Biomass has energy stored in it from the
sun.
• Plants get energy from the sun through a
process called photosynthesis
• While animals get their energy indirectly
from the sun by eating plants
Biomass has been used as a source of
energy since man first discovered fire.

The use of biofuels such as ethanol has

been around for some time as well.

- It was used as a lamp fuel in the United

History States in the 1800s.
- The first model-T Fords used ethanol for
fuel until 1908.

Biomass and biofuels have become

popular as an alternative to fossil fuels
such as gasoline.
• Biomass energy is considered a renewable
energy source because we can always
grow more plants and trees.

1. WOOD AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS

Most biomass used today is home grown energy. Wood, chips,
bark and sawdust and agricultural waste products like fruit pits
and corncobs.

2. SOLID WASTEBurning trash turns waste into a usable from of

energy. Though, garbage is not all biomass: some of its energy
content comes from plastics, which are made from petroleum and
natural gas.

3. LANDFILL GAS AND BIOGAS

Bacteria and fungi eat dead plants and animals, causing them to
rot or decay. A fungus on a rotting log is converting cellulose to
sugars to feed itself and then a substance called methane gas is
produced as the waste decays
5. ETHANOL
Is an alcohol fuel made by
fermenting the sugars and starches
found in plants and then distilling
them.

6. BIODIESEL
It is a fuel made by chemically reacting alcohol
with vegetable oils, animal fats, or greases, such
as recycled restaurant grease.

DISADVANTAGES OF
BIOMASS TO ENERGY

• Air pollution
From burning

• Greenhouse gasses
Such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere

• Burning trash and waste

Can release harmful chemicals and gasses into the
environment

• Reduces habitats and destroys ecosystem

Because of the land cleared for growing corn and
sugarcane and trees
• The land used for growing
biomass could be used to grow
other crops for food

• WATER POLLUTION
Growing biomass can use
fertilizers and other chemicals
that can cause water pollution
ADVANTAGES OF
BIOMASS TO ENERGY
• BIOMASS IS ALWAYS AND WIDELY AVAILABLE AS A RENEWABLE SOURCE OF ENERGY

• IT IS CARBON NEUTRAL

• IT REDUCES THE OVERRELIANCE OF FOSSIL FUELS

• IT IS LESS EXPENSIVE THAN FOSSIL FUELS

• BIOMASS PRODUCTION ADDS A REVENUE SOURCE FOR MANAFACTURERS

• LESS GARBAGE IN LANDFILLS

Facts about biomass energy
• The methane gas from cow manure can be used to create energy.
• Most of the gasoline sold in the united states contains some ethanol.
• Garbage is burned for energy as well. This is not only making use of
trash for energy but reduces the amount of trash that goes into
landfills.
• Farmers can create energy from animal manure using tanks called
digesters. The digesters produce biogas, which can be used to
generate electricity.
• Biodiesel is the fastest growing alternative fuel in the united states.
