EQUATION IN
STANDARD FORM
OBJECTIVES
• Write quadratic equation in
standard form; and
• Identify the value of a, b, and c.
ACTIVITY 1. QUADRATIC
OR NOT
Identify which of the following equations are
quadratic and which are not.
1. 2x2 + 6x -4 = 0 4. x + 8 = 0
2. 3x2 – 4x = 8 5. 2(x + 3) = 1
3. 2x2 = 6x + 12 6. (x + 2 )( x – 4) =9
QUADRATIC EQUATION
IS A MATHEMATICAL SENTENCE OF
DEGREE 2 THAT CAN BE WRITTEN IN
THE STANDARD FORM ax2 + bx + c = 0,
WHERE a, b and c are real numbers and a ≠
0. ax2 is the quadratic term, bx IS THE
LINEAR TERM AND c IS THE
CONSTANT TERM.
STANDARD FORM:
AX + BX + C = 0
2
Example 1. Example 2.
4x2 + 6x + 12 = 0 x2 – 7x – 8 = 0
a=4 a= 1
b=6 b = -7
c = 12 c = -8
When b = 0 in the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, it
results to the equation in the form ax2 + c = 0.
Example 1. 2x2 + 5 = 0
a=2
b=0
c=5
Example 2. 6x2 – 8 = 0
a=6
b=0
c = -8
ACTIVITY 2: SET ME TO YOUR
STANDARD
1. 3x – 2x2 = 9
5. 2x(x- 5) = 12
2. 7 – 3x2 = 6x
6. (x+7)(x-7) = -2x
3. (x + 2 )( x – 4 )=0
7. (x -4) 2 + 9 = 0
4. (2x + 7)(x -4 )=0
1. 9 – 7x2 = 12
2. ( 2x – 1) 2 = ( x + 1) 2
3. 2x ( x + 4 ) = (x – 3) ( x – 3)
