Standard Form of a Quadratic Equation

A quadratic equation is an equation in the form ax 2 + bx + c = 0,

where a ≠ 0. This is the standard form of a quadratic equation.

The following are examples of quadratic equation.

4x2 + 3x + 7 = 0, 8x2 – 3 = 0, 9x2 = 0

Example

Rewrite the following quadratic equation in standard form, and determine the values of
a, b, and c.

1. x2 + 16 = 8x

2. (2x – 7)(2x – 7) = 0

3. x (x + 6) = - 9

Solution

1. x2 + 16 = - 8x Given
x2 + 16 + 8x = -8x + 8x Add 8x to both sides.
x2 + 8x + 16 = 8x Simplify.

Therefore, a = 1, b = 8, and c = 16.

2. (2x – 7)(2x – 7) = 0 Given

4x2 – 14x – 14x + 49 = 0 Product of Binomials, using FOIL
method
4x2 – 28x + 49 = 0 Simplify.
Therefore, a = 4, b = -28, and c = 49.

3. x (x + 6) = - 9 Given
x2 + 6x = -9 Distributive Property
x2 + 6x + 9 = -9 + 9 Add 9 to both sides.
x2 + 6x + 9 = 0 Simplify.

Therefore, a = 1, b = 6, and c = 9.
