Remediation Activity 3
Example
Rewrite the following quadratic equation in standard form, and determine the values of
a, b, and c.
1. x2 + 16 = 8x
2. (2x – 7)(2x – 7) = 0
3. x (x + 6) = - 9
Solution
1. x2 + 16 = - 8x Given
x2 + 16 + 8x = -8x + 8x Add 8x to both sides.
x2 + 8x + 16 = 8x Simplify.
3. x (x + 6) = - 9 Given
x2 + 6x = -9 Distributive Property
x2 + 6x + 9 = -9 + 9 Add 9 to both sides.
x2 + 6x + 9 = 0 Simplify.
Therefore, a = 1, b = 6, and c = 9.
Direction: Rewrite each quadratic equation in standard form. And identify the
value of a, b, and c for each equation. Write your answer on the space
provided.
1. x (x + 14) = -49
2. (n + 3)2 = 25
3. 2x2 = 3 – 5x
4. (3p + 5)(2p – 3) = 0
5. y(y + 4) = 12
Direction: Identify If it is a quadratic equation, write QE, if not, write NQE. Write
your answer on the space provided.
__________1. x2 + 6 =0
__________2. 3x3 – 9x + 9 = 0
__________3. -7x2 = 49
__________4. 2x + 4=0
2. 4r2 + 1 = 325
2. b2 + 3b+2=0
1. x2 + 2x – 24 = 0 3. r2 + 18r + 56 = 0
2. p2 + 12p – 54 = 0
2. a2 + 11a – 12 = 0
