Varieties of British English

 Scottish English
 A variety spoken in Scotland.
 Has separate written and spoken variety.
 Differ from other varieties.
 It is used in legal documents, local government procedures,
religion and education in the region.
 Lack of some vowel sounds.
 Spoken format do not have a “schwa” sound.
 Front and back “/a/” sound is same.
 Irish English
 Spoken in Ireland.
 Known as Hiberno - English or Anglo - Irish.
 Has distinctive features in pronunciation, vocabulary and
grammar.
 Has regional variation
• Northern Irish English
• Southern Irish English
• New Dublin English
