ABSTRACT
Electrical energy plays an important role in our day to day life and backbone for the
industries. Today we can’t imagine life without electricity. Because of the unnecessary
actions taken by human beings, wastage and theft of power increasing day by day.
Power theft is that the most important problem in recent days which causes a lot of
loss to electricity boards. In countries like India, these situations are more often, if we
are ready to prevent these thefts we will save a lot of power. If proper actions are not
taken to save electricity, future generations have no scope of living their life in light,
peace, and harmony. Electricity theft is a great concern for the utilities. Many times
power theft has been a major impact on the economy as well as the development of
the country. The objective of this project is to design a system that will try to
minimize the illegal use of electricity and also reduce the chances of theft.
PROPOSED SYSTEM
The proposed system involves detecting power theft and also takes
necessary actions on the spot. Using IOT application we can detect the
power theft and send the status of the transmission lines via SMS.

In this project, we'll use an IOT (internet of things). This project describes
the automated POWER THEFT detection system. Here we use a Current
sensor which is connected to the AC load to calculate the current value. If
just incase more load is drawn, the current value changes and thereby the
power theft is detected and this power theft information is sent to the
concerned authorities via SMS. In addition to this we can monitor the
whole status of this system using a mobile app.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENT
NodeMCU Microcontroller

Stepdown Transformer(12VAC)

Bridge Rectifier (DB107)

Capacitive Filter(470µf)

Voltage regulator(7805)

Current Sensor(ACS712)

Relay

AC Load

Switch(To create theft)

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENT
Arduino IDE(1.8.13)

Proteus 8

Ubidots Cloud Server

LANGUAGE: Embedded C
NODEMCU PINCONFIGURATION
SPECIFICATIONS
NodeMCU esp8266 wi-fi module is an open-source, low-cost, low-power
MCU(microcontroller unit) development board. It has 17 GPIO pins(11 are Digital
I/O pins), out of which one pin is an analog pin, 4 pins support PWM, 2 pairs are for
UART(UART0 and UART1), and supports 1x SPI and 1x I2C protocol.

NodeMCU ESP8266 has 128Kb of Ram, 4 MB of Flash memory, and a maximum

clock speed of 160MHz(80 -160). The operating current is 80mA(average).

The ESP8266 Integrates 802.11b/g/n HT40 Wi-Fi transceiver chip for Wi-Fi

connectivity and gives it the additional advantage of creating its own network thus
allowing other devices to connect directly to it.
CONCLUSION
This proposed system and technique to detect and prevent the
power theft is efficient one in todays modern world. By using
these techniques we can easily detect and prevent our system from
power theft and we can overcome this global threat of power theft
and able to meet the increasing demand of electricity. It will be
helpful for overall growth of our country.
