Summer Exploration and Development

By Reyna Meredith
How have you ● Interests: Theatre, Acting,
Dancing, Cooking, Baking, sign
developed and/or language, music
learned more about your
interests, concerns, and
passions this summer? ● Passions: Acting, Baking

● Concerns: The language barrier

for deaf and hard of hearing
people while trying to
communicate through a mask
How will these I always knew that I wanted to continue
my education in acting, theatre or an arts
developments affect program of some sorts but while
future choices in experiencing communication through a
mask between two hearing people made
academic and me wonder the difficulties deaf
extracurricular pursuits? community has. They rely completely on
reading lips and facial expressions to
communicate and understand emotion
and with masks it makes it very difficult
to do that. I might want to consider
furthering my education in ASL to
become fluent.
What did you do this Learning to drive this summer was
one of the most challenging things I
summer that most did because I’ve never driven before
challenged you? and I was controlling a very heavy
object that can move at fast speeds
and that can definitely hurt myself or
someone else if I made a mistake.
What was the easiest Making churros was the most
pleasurable activity because I
and/ or the most created one of my favorite childhood
pleasurable treats. It only got hard because I had
tasks/activities this just piped a churro into the hot oil to
summer? cook it and some oil splashed up and
burned my hand so I had to get some
help before it caught fire while i put
cold water on my burn and some ice
to prevent blistering.
In reading Catcher in Holden has this idea that everyone
who annoys him is a phony. This idea
the rye, what ideas or appeals to frustration in everyday life
philosophies appealed to when people just seem to pick one
you most? Why? day to simultaneously tick me off
even if they are doing it
subconsciously. Also Holden’s idea
of wanting to keep a grasp of his
childhood and innocence appealed
to me because I feel like when you
experience grown up stuff you get
the feeling of “I’m not a kid anymore
and that is scary”.
