What are Electric Vehicles
Electric Vehicles (EVs), powered by batteries. EVs use an electric motor rather
than an internal combustion engine (ICE). Because the EV is powered by
electricity, it does not emit pollution from its pipeline, leading to the
production of a zero tailpipe pipe. It also does not have components such as a
fuel pump, fuel line, and fuel tank.Electric vehicle is seen as a possible
replacement for the current-generation automobile in near future to address
environmental challenges.
Pillars of an electric mobility ecosystem
4 Pillars
1.Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV): Fully powered by electricity. These are more efficient compared to hybrid and
plug-in hybrids.
2.Hybrid Electric Vehicle:
2.1. Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): The vehicle uses both the internal combustion (usually petrol) engine and
the battery-powered motor powertrain. The petrol engine is used both to drive and charge when the battery is
empty. These vehicles are not as efficient as fully electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
2.2. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV): Uses both an internal combustion engine and a battery charged
from an external socket (they have a plug). This means the vehicle’s battery can be charged with electricity
rather than the engine. PHEVs are more efficient than HEVs but less efficient than BEVs.
3. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV): Electric energy is produced from chemical energy. For example, a hydrogen
FCEV.
How does electric car work?
● The range of EVs, or the distance a car can cover before needing a recharge,
can be a problem. They can only cover a few km daily.
● Installation of Level 2 charging stations at home can be an added expense.
● There is less service availability for EVs than petrol cars.
● EV battery replacement costs can be hard on the pocket. However, a battery
has a pretty long shelf life of 10 years.
Future of Electric Vehicles
● The future of battery electric vehicles depends primarily upon the cost and
availability of batteries with high specific energy, power density, short charge time
and long life, as all other aspects such as motor, motor controllers, and chargers are
fairly mature and cost - competitive with internal combustion engine components.
● Li-ion, li-poli and zinc-air batteries have demonstrated specific energy high enough
to deliver range and recharge time comparable to conventional vehicles.
