• CONCRETE
By computing the volume of concrete :

V = Length x Height x Width

This formula will be use in computing the volume of water, embankment,

concrete foundation, column beam , slab.
Factors changes depend on the mixtures and proportion of concrete.

• CONCRETE
For example: 101

Find the volume of concrete foundation using its dimension:

Length = 1.2
Width = 1.2 mts
Thickness = 0.30 mts
:.
1.2 x 1.2 x 0.30 = 0.432 cu.m

Length = 1.5 MTS

Width = 1.5 MTS
Thickness = 0.30 mts

• CONCRETE
Using Sample 101 problem

Find the volume of concrete foundation using its dimension with concrete
proportion Class A 40 kgs compute the number of bags of cement,
sand in cu. m and Gravel
Refer to table 1-2 Class A Proportion 1:2:4 40 kgs cement
Length = 1.2 Factor : Cement : 9
Width = 1.2 mts Sand : 0.50
Thickness = 0.30 mts Gravel : 1.0 • Say
:. Volume = 0.432 cu.m 4 Bags of Cement 40 kgs
1.2 x 1.2 x 0.30 = 0.432 cu.m 0.216 Cu.m of Sand
9 x 0.432 = 3.88 0.432 of Gravel
0.50 x 0.432 = 0.216
1.00 x 0.432 = 0.432

with concrete proportion Class A 50 kgs compute the number of bags of
cement, sand in cu. m and Gravel
Refer to table 1-2 Class A Proportion 1:2:4 50 kgs cement
Length = 1.5 MTS Factor : Cement : 7
Width = 1.5 MTS Sand : 0.50
Thickness = 0.30 mts Gravel : 1.0 • Say
1.5x 1.5 x 0.30 = 0.675 cu.m Volume = 5.40 cu.m 38 Bags of Cement 40 kgs
8 Pcs foundation 2.7 Cu.m of Sand
8 x 0.675 = 5.40 cu.m 7 x 5.40 = 37.8 5.40 cum of Gravel
0.50 x 5.40 = 2.7
1.00 x 5.40 = 5.40

• By Computing Concrete Slab we Can use 2 Methods for comparison ( Volume and
Area Method

Problem:

Compute the volume of concrete slab no. of bags of cement sand and gravel using 2
methods ( Length 3.00 mts , Width 5.00 , Thickness .150 )
Course Outline : SPECIFICATIONS WRITING AND QUANTITY SURVEYINGBSA 3 BT-4

2. Estimating and Quantity Surveying

• By Volume Method Using Table 1-2 Class A 1:2:4 40 kgs cement

Find the Volume:

• Say
5 x3 x .15 = 2.25 21 Bags of Cement 40 kgs
1.125 Cu.m of Sand
Class A Mixtures 2.25 of Gravel

2.25 x 9 = 20.25
2.25 x .50 =1.125
2.25 x 1.0 = 2.25
Course Outline : SPECIFICATIONS WRITING AND QUANTITY SURVEYINGBSA 3 BT-4

2. Estimating and Quantity Surveying

• By Area Method Using Table 1-3 Class A Mixtures 15 cm thk. 40 kgs cement

Find the Area:

• Say
5 x3 = 15 21 Bags of Cement 40 kgs
1.125 Cu.m of Sand
Class A Mixtures 2.25 of Gravel

1.350 x 15 = 20.25
0.0750x 15 =1.125
.150x 15= 2.25

2. Estimating and Quantity Surveying

Problem exercise :

Compute the volume of concrete slab no. of bags of cement sand and gravel using 2
methods using 4 kgs cement Class A Mixtures ( Length 4.85 mts , Width 10.00 ,
Thickness .125 )
Course Outline : SPECIFICATIONS WRITING AND QUANTITY SURVEYINGBSA 3 BT-4

2. Estimating and Quantity Surveying

• By Volume Method Using Table 1-2 Class A 1:2:4 40 kgs cement

Find the Volume:

• Say
4.85 x 10 x .125 = 6.0625 55 Bags of Cement 40 kgs
3.031 Cu.m of Sand
Class A Mixtures 6.0625 of Gravel

6.0625 x 9 = 54.56
6.0625 x .50 =3.031
6.0625 x 1.0 = 6.0625
Course Outline : SPECIFICATIONS WRITING AND QUANTITY SURVEYINGBSA 3 BT-4

2. Estimating and Quantity Surveying

• By Area Method Using Table 1-3 Class A Mixtures 12.5 cm thk. 40 kgs cement

Find the Area:

• Say
10 X 4.85 = 48.5 55 Bags of Cement 40 kgs
3.055 Cu.m of Sand
Class A Mixtures 6.625 of Gravel

48.5 x 1.125 = 54.56

0.0630 x 48.5 =3.055

2. Estimating and Quantity Surveying

• COLUMN
• IN COMPUTING THE VOLUME OF COLUMN / BEAM NO. OF BAGS OF CEMENT
SAND AND GRAVEL IS SAME PROCEDURE LIKE WHAT WE USED IN FOUNDATION,
BUT LET US FOCUS ON VOLUME METHOD.

*Find the VOLUME of a concrete post, cement sand and gravel Class A mixtures with
the dimension of 3.00 mts x 0.40 mts x 0.40 mts add up the footing embankment
height 1.50 mts less the footing thickness 0.30
• Say
Vol: 0.672
6 Bags of Cement 40 kgs
0.336 Cu.m of Sand
Class A Mixtures
0.672 of Gravel
0.672 x 9 = 6.048
0.672 x0.5=0.336
0.672x1= 0.672

2. Estimating and Quantity Surveying

• IN COMPUTING THE VOLUME OF BEAM YOU SHOULD CONSIDER THE POINT OF
YOUR ORIGIN.
Course Outline : SPECIFICATIONS WRITING AND QUANTITY SURVEYINGBSA 3 BT-4

2. Estimating and Quantity Surveying

• FOR BEAM YOU NEED TO LESS THE SIZE OF COLUMN:

• COLUMN = 0.40
• BEAM = 3.80 MTS / THICKNESS 0.40 / HEIGHT 0.50

:. 0.40 ( 2) – 3.80 = 3.00

TL = 3.00
VOL: 3 X .40 X .50
• Say
Vol:0.60 6 Bags of Cement 40 kgs
Class A Mixtures 0.30 Cu.m of Sand
0.60 x 9 = 5.4 0.60 of Gravel
0.60 x0.5=.30
0.60 x1= 0.60
