Waterfall, area where flowing river water drops abruptly and
nearly vertically. Waterfalls represent major interruptions in
river flow. Under most circumstances, rivers tend to smooth
out irregularities in their flow by processes of erosion and
deposition. In time, the long profile of a river takes the form
of a smooth curve, steepest toward the source, gentlest
toward the mouth. Waterfalls interrupt this curve, and their
presence is a measure of the progress of erosion.
