What is NANOTECHNOLOGY ?

• Nanotechnology is the hybrid science

combining engineering and chemistry
that have applications in the real world.
• Field of applied science whose theme is
the control of matter on an atomic and
molecular scale .
• The area of nanotechnology lets one build
elaborate structures ,atom by atom ,
on a scale of 1 to 100 nanometers that
can store information, switch electrical
signals, convert sunlight to electricity .
Origins of Nanotechnology

• Noble prize winner Richard Feynman first conceived the idea of molecular
manufacturing in his 1959 speech,
“There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom.“
• Suggested that devices and materials could someday
be fabricated to atomic specifications .

• Dr. K. Eric Drexler is the Father of Nanotechnology .

• Wrote "Engines of Creation" and introduced the term
Nanotechnology .
Approaches to Nanotechnology

• Bottom up :Materials and devices are built from molecular components

which assemble themselves chemically by principle of molecular
recognition.
• Top down :Nano objects are constructed from larger entities without
atomic-level control.
Applications

In Computer Science
 Faster Processors – Fast processing units.
 New Memory Types -Creates ultra high
density memories.
 Quantum Computing
In Electronics
 Telecommunications -Offers improved versatility through faster data
transfer, more mobile processing power and larger data storage.
 Nano-transistors -Minimum transistor dimensions of a few nanometers
with high speed .
Applications (contd.)

In Medicine
 Tissue Engineering -Nanotechnology can help to reproduce or to repair
damaged tissue.
 Nano shells –These particles imbed only with tumors and can be heated
by infrared radiation to destroy the cancer and leave the healthy cells
unharmed .
Applications (contd.)

In Consumer Goods
 Textiles
 Cosmetics
 Sunscreen
ADVANTAGES OF
NANOTECHNOLOGY
• End of Illnesses (i.e. Cancer, heart disease)
• Universal immunity (i.e. aids, flu)
• Computers a billion times faster and a million times smaller
• Automatic Pollution Cleanup
• Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry.
DISADVANTAGES OF
NANOTECHNOLOGY
• Global monetary crisis.
• Loss of jobs.
• Oil becomes worthless.
• Atomic weapons more destructive and accessible.
Recent Achievements in
Nanotechnology
Graphene - A sheet of material that's just one atom thick, yet super-strong,
highly conductive and practically transparent .

It is not only the thinnest material in the world, but also one of the strongest
and hardest.

Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, 2010 Nobel Laureates in Physics for
Graphene.
Future of Nanotechnology

No one knows for sure …

History shows that science and technology impact society, but there is no way
2 predict :
-what new scientific discoveries will be next
-how technology will be used
Predictions -
• Nanotechnology will redesign the future of several technologies, products
and markets.
• Scientists and engineers can now work with materials at the atomic level
to create stain-proof fabrics, scratch-resistant paints, more efficient fuel
cells and batteries
• Experts says that nanotechnology will likely create the next generation of
billionaires and reshape global business
Conclusion
• Nanotechnology offers the ability to build large numbers of products that
are incredibly powerful
• It helps to understand the world around us, and will provide inspiration
and drive for many generation of scientists .
• Thus the future generation is going to continue the fantastic voyage with
Nanotechnology in advanced level making life easier.
