In 2020/2021

There are some work to be

done before semester 2

XE636 Project Module

• Module code: XE636.

• Module title: Project (Final Year /

• This module applies to EE, Mech,
Auto/Aero BEng/MEng students.

XE636 Project Module

Credit Rating: 40 CATS Points

• Remember that the project module is equivalent to
four (10 CATS) Level 6 modules.
• For final year of BEng, this represents 25% of
the marks for the classification of the degree.
• For MEng students, this represents 17% of the
marks for the classification of the degree.
• Semester 2 only for 2020/2021
• Controversial Point: 24 hours per week of student
effort is required.

XE636 Project Module
You are the project
manager!!!!

• Aims:
To provide an opportunity for the
student to demonstrate professional
and technical competence in
executing a complex, independent,
self-directed project.
To demonstrate research, analysis,
synthesis, technical depth and
engineering application within their
chosen area 7
XE636 Project Module

Each student will have a project, a

supervisor (to be allocated next week)
and an internal examiner (to be
allocated later).
Your responsibility for XE636:

You are the project manager!!

It is your responsibility to get in touch
with your supervisor to arrange project
meetings!!!!

XE636 Project Module

Your Supervisor
• Your supervisor is there to GUIDE and FACILITATE
your project.
• He/she may or may not be an expert in the exact field
of your project. They will be qualified and will know how
to supervise a Final Year Project.
• Suggest weekly meetings.
(on average 1 hour/week)

9
XE636 Project Module

Your Supervisor

• Do not expect your supervisor to do

your project for you.
• Do not expect your supervisor to be
available exactly when you want –
email/phone for an appointment!
• By the end of the project, you should know
much more than your supervisor (about
your project).

XE636 Project Module

What Should your Project Contain?

• "The project must display the candidate’s depth

of technical knowledge in the chosen subject
and demonstrate his/her understanding of
engineering principles". (Reference: Engineering
Council).
• Try to use material you have learnt in levels 4, 5
and
6. Use equations where possible.

• My role is administrative and to ensure
uniformity of application of the assessment
criteria.
• I will communicate information mostly via:
(i) Studentcentral / XE636;
(ii) Email.
(iii) MS Teams

12
XE636 Project Module

• E-submission of all work (Turnitin).

• E-marking and feedback of most work.
• You should assume that you will not be allowed to
work in the workshops during vacations – add this
and any other time constraints to your Gantt Chart!

Project time management is

very important!!!

Please note the project idea is indicative, not

final. You will need to discuss with your

• What to do in semester 1

Risk assessment and mitigation needs to

be conducted in semester 1
(jointly between supervisor and
student)
o access to resource especially in
response to Covid 19; e.g.
software, hardware, computer

o health and safety

Challenges

Challenges I anticipate for both students and

supervisor are
• More intensive and shorter, less time to
deal with unexpected situation.
• Time management is paramount!!!!
• Reduced access to lab
• Good engagement/communication with
your supervisor to identify issues at an early
stage
• Shorter feedback timelines.

Conclusions
• It is an important module, (but don’t neglect your other
modules).
• It will be substantially responsible for the outcome
of your degree.
• It is likely to be asked about at job interviews.
• This is just an introduction. For more advice, keep
asking questions and read the instructions referred to
in this presentation.
• Finally, remember that here’s no time like the present!
