THE OZONE LAYER

DEPLETION
BY: DIETHER B. VEA
INTRODUCTION TO OZONE LAYER
DEPLETION
The layer refers to a region of earth’s stratosphere
that absorbs most of the sun ultraviolet (UV)
radiation.
It contains the high concentration of ozone (O3)
relative to other parts of the atmosphere.
The ozone layer is mainly found in the lower
point of the stratosphere. The ozon layer was
discovered in 1913Charles Fabry and Henry
Buisson.
OZONE DEPLETION
 Ozone describe two phenomena; a steady decline of
about 4 percent in total volume of ozone in earth's
stratosphere, the ozone hole.
 Catalytic destruction of ozone is by atomic halogens.
The main source of these halogen atom is halocarbon
refrigerants, solvent, propellants, and foam-blowing
agents (HCFCs, freons, Halons,).
 CFCs and other contributory substances are referred to
as ozone depleting substances (ODS).
OZONE CYCLE OVERVIEW

 Three forms oxygen involves in the ozone oxygen

cycle: oxygen atom, oxygen gas, and ozone gas.
 Chlorine ion (Cl.) and atomic bromine ion (Br.) are the
ions which are harmful for the ozone layer. These
elements are found in certain stable organic compounds,
especially chlorofluorocarbon which may find their way
to the stratosphere without being destroyed in the
troposphere due to their low reactivity.
OBSERVATION ON OZONE LAYER
DEPLETION
 The most pronounced decrease in ozone has been in the
lower stratosphere .
 Marked decreases in column ozone have been observed
using instrument such as the Total Ozone Mapping
Spectrometer (TOMS)
 Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) form more readily in
the extreme cold in the Arctic and Antarctic
stratosphere. So, ozone holes first formed and are
deeper, over Antartica.
CFCS AND OTHER RELATED
COMPOUNDS

 Chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs) and other

halogenated ozone depleting substances (ODS)
are mainly responsible for man-made chemical
ozone depletion. The total amount of effective
halogens (chlorine and bromine) in the
stratosphere can be calculated and are known as
the equivalent effective stratospheric chlorine
(EESC).
OZONE HOLE AND ITS CAUSES

 The primary effect of ozone depletion is the

presence of chlorine- containing source gases
(primarily CFCs and related halocarbon)
 Most of the ozone that is destroyed in the lower
stratosphere, in contrast to the much smaller
ozone depletion through homogeneous gas
primarily in the upper stratosphere .
INTEREST IN OZONE DEPLETION

 The decrease in the ozone layer was predicted in the early 1980s to be roughly
7 percent over a 60 year period.
 The sudden recognition in 1985 that there was a substantial “hole” was widely
reported in the press.
 Many of those unsure about what the ozone hole was and what caused it were
worried that ozone might start appearing over other areas of the globe
 If the conditions become more severe global ozone may decrease at a much
greater pace.
 When the Antarctic ozone hole breaks up, the ozone depleted air drifts out into
nearby areas.
CONSEQUENCES OF OZONE LAYER
DEPLETION

Increased in Ultraviolet
Effect on human health
Effects on animals
Crops production is affected
OZONE DEPLETION AND GLOBAL
WARMING
FIVE AREAS OF LINKAGES BETWEEN OZONE LAYER AND
GLOBAL WARMING.
The same carbon Dioxide radiate forcing that global warming is
expected to cool the stratosphere. This cooling, in turn, is expected to
produce relative increase in ozone trioxide depletion in polar area and the
frequency of ozone holes.
Conversely, there are two opposing effects: reduced ozone causes the
stratosphere to absorb less solar radiation, the resulting colder, thus
cooling the troposphere. Overall, cooling dominates.
EFFECTS OF OZONE DEPLETION

 The Environment. Strong ultraviolet rays may lead to minimal

growth, flowering and photosynthesis in plants. The forests also
have to bear the harmful effects of the ultraviolet rays.
 Human Health. The human health will be directly exposed to the
harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun due to the depletion of
the ozone layer. This might be result in serious health issues
among humans, such as skin disease, cancer, sunburn, cataract,
quick ageing, and weekend immune system.
 To Animals. Directly exposure to ultraviolet radiations leads to
skin and eye cancer in animals.
SOLUTION TO OZONE LAYER
DEPLETION
 Avoid using pesticide. Natural method should be implemented to get rid of
pests and weeds instead of using chemicals. One can used eco-friendly
chemicals to remove the pests or remove it through manually.
 Minimize the uses of vehicles. The vehicles emit a large amount of
greenhouse grasses that lead to global warming as well as ozone depletion.
Therefore, the used of vehicle should be minimize as much as possible.
 Use eco-friendly cleaning products. Most of the cleaning products have
chlorine and bromine releasing chemicals that find a way into the atmosphere
and affect the ozone layer. These should be substituted with natural products to
protect the environment.
