Principle of manufacturing
• Subtractive manufacturing

Example: Lathe-turning, milling, drilling, sawing, thread-cutting etc.,

• Additive manufacturing
Example: Selective laser sintering (SLS), Stereolithography, Fused
deposition modeling (FDM),Laminated object manufacturing etc.,
Different Methods:
Selective laser sintering (SLS):
SLS is an additive manufacturing technique that uses a high power laser
(for example, a carbon dioxide laser) to fuse small particles of plastic,
metal (direct metal laser sintering),ceramic or glass powders into a
mass that has a desired 3-dimensional shape.
Stereolithography(SLA):
Stereolithography is a technique for layer by layer structure fabrication,
where a laser beam is focused to a free surface of a photosensitive
liquid to induce polymerization of the liquid in that region and
transform it to a polymerized solid.
Laminated object manufacturing(LOM):
Laminated object manufacturing (LOM) is a rapid prototyping system
developed by Helisys Inc. In it, layers of adhesive-coated paper, plastic
or metal laminates are successively glued together and cut to shape
with a knife or laser cutter.
What is 3D printing?
• 3D printing is type of additive manufacturing process.

• The process of making physical object from a 3D digital model,

typically by laying down many successive thin layer of material.

Why 3D printing?
• Prototype
• Complex part
• Easy of procedure
• To make customized parts easily
Demerits:
• High energy consumption
• Harmful emission
• Slow process
• Limited material usage
Flow process:

Conclusion
• Nothing communicates ideas faster than a three-dimensional part or
model. With a 3D printer we can bring CAD files and design ideas to
life – right from the desktop.
• Test form, fit and function – and as many design variations as there
can be – with functional parts.
