Management of

biodegradable wastes
Done by Nishka Jain
What are biodegradable wastes?
Biodegradable wastes are also called organic wastes. Examples of
biodegradable wastes are vegetable peels ,waste food , dead flowers
,leaves and egg shells.
There are many ways in which biodegradable wastes can be
handled.

• Composting
• Landfills
• Bio-gas plant
• Feeding food waste to animals.
Composting
1. Recycling of organic wastes, such as waste food and leaves, by burying them
in compost pits to form nutrient-rich compost/manure is called composting.
2. The biodegradable wastes are degraded by the action of small organisms such
as bacteria and fungi.
3. This manure can be used in vegetable gardens at homes or in parks and
gardens around.
4. There is another type of composting in which red worms(also called red
wriggles)act on wastes and degrade them. This type of composting is called
Vermicomposting.
5. Red worms are used in this process to break down the organic matter into
nutrient-rich soil which increases soil fertility.

Landfills
1. Large areas used for waste disposal are called landfills.
2. Landfills are used to manage huge amounts of biodegradable along with non-
biodegradable wastes.
3. In a landfill, the garbage is buried in such a way that it does not damage the
environment. The garbage here stays for a long time, as it takes time to
decompose.
4. After a landfill is full, it can be converted into a park. Ex-Indraprastha park in
New Delhi.
1 Clay and 2 plastic barriers do not allow the
garbage to mix with the soil and groundwater.
3 Special pipes contain rain water that flow
through the landfill.
4 Each day’s garbage is separated in
compartments, each called a cell.
5 Heavy vehicles are used to compress the cells to
create more space for adding new cells.
