 Complimenting and congratulating
‘HOPE’
 A ‘hope’ expresses a desire for a future change. (harapan adalah bentuk ungkapan keinginan
terhadap perubahan di masa yang akan datang.)
 Hope menandakan suatu harapan yang dapat diwujudkan dan sangat mungkin terjadi.
 Example:
1. I hope I have time tomorrow
2. I hope it doesn’t rain later
3. I hope he likes it
4. I hope I can finish the test on time
5. I hope you passed his exam
6. I hope our team will win the competition
‘WISH’
 A ‘wish’ expresses a desire for something that is different from the present reality. (Wish adalah bentuk
ungkapan keinginan terhadap sesuatu hal yang berbeda dengan kenyataan (keadaan saat ini))
 Wish dapat digunakan untuk berbagai kondisi, misalnya:
1. Mengekspresikan pengandaian (masa lalu)
• I wish I had more time
• I wish I could speak English fluently I wish it wasn’t raining
2. Mengucapkan keinginan dengan lebih sopan
• I wish to reserve a table for five since I came first
• Due to the traffic jam, I wish to get to cinema in 30 minutes
3. Mengungkapkan doa
• Wish you luck on your competition
• I wish all the best for you
• I wish I could be enrolled to Universitas Indonesia next year
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘HOPE’ AND
‘WISH’
The main difference between ‘hope’ and ‘wish’ is that:
 When we use hope, we don’t know all of the facts (a kind of future meaning)
 When we use wish, we know all the facts already
For instance, I hope you will be OK and I wish you were here

COMPLIMENTING
 Compliment is an expression that we use to praise someone for their achievement,
appearance, and/or to praise their belongings. (Compliment adalah ungkapan yang
digunakan untuk memuji sesorang atas pencapaian, penampilan, dan/atau untuk
memuji barang-barang milik orang lain.)
 Example :
1. You look great in that dress
2. Good job on the game buddy
CONGRATULATING

 Congratulation is an expression that we use to congratulate other people when


they succeed in doing something. (Congratulation adalah ungkapan yang
digunakan untuk memberikan selamat kepada orang lain atas keberhasilan yang
telah dilakukan.)
 Example :
1. I must congratulate you on your success in getting the promotion
2. Congratulations! It is great to hear that you won the competition
