Z-TEST
 A z-test is a statistical test used to determine
whether two population means are different
when the variances are known and the sample
size is large. The test statistic is assumed to
have a normal distribution, and nuisance
parameters such as standard deviation should
be known in order for an accurate z-test to be
performed.
WHEN TO USE Z-TEST?
 If the sample size is large enough, then the Z
test and t-Test will conclude with the same
results. For a large sample size, Sample
Variance will be a better estimate of Population
variance so even if population variance is
unknown, we can use the Z test using sample
variance.

PROBLEM 1
 A principal at a certain school claims that
the students in his school are above
average intelligence. A random sample of
thirty students IQ scores have a mean score of
112. Is there sufficient evidence to support the
principal’s claim? The mean population IQ is
100 with a standard deviation of 15.
STATE THE HYPOTHESIS:

GIVEN, FORMULA, AND SOLUTION:

Z-TABLE VALUE: 1.64
4.56>1.64
We cann reject the null hypothesis
PROBLEM 2
 1,500 women followed the Atkin’s diet for a
month. A random sample of 29 women gained
an average of 6.7 pounds. Test the hypothesis
that the average weight gain per woman for the
month was over 5 pounds. The standard
deviation for all women in the group was 7.1.
STATE THE HYPOTHESIS:

GIVEN, FORMULA, AND SOLUTION:

Z-TABLE VALUE: 1.64
1.289<1.64
We cannot reject the null hypothesis
PROBLEM 3
 The amount of a certain trace element in blood
is known to vary with a standard deviation of
14.1 ppm (parts per million) for donors.
Random samples of 75 male and 50 female
donors yield concentration means of 28 and 33
ppm, respectively. What is the likelihood that
the population means of concentrations of the
element are the same for men and women?
STATE THE HYPOTHESIS:

GIVEN, FORMULA, AND SOLUTION:

Z-TABLE VALUE: -2.37

The computed z‐value is negative because the

larger mean for females was subtracted from the
smaller mean for males.
If z would be 2.37 instead of –2.37.
An extreme z‐score from alpha level which is 5%
= 1.654 (plus or minus) will lead to rejection of the
null hypothesis.
PROBLEM 4
 Time magazine reported the result of a
telephone poll of 800 adult Americans.  The
question posed of the Americans who were
surveyed was: "Should the federal tax on
cigarettes be raised to pay for health care
reform?  The results of the survey were: 351
said "yes" out of 605 Non-smokers and 41 said
"yes" out of 195 smokers.  Is there a significant
difference between the response of the smokers
and non-smokers?
SAMPLE PROPORTION:

GIVEN, FORMULA, AND SOLUTION:

What is Analysis of Variance?
 Analysis of variance is a collection of statistical
models and their associated estimation
procedures used to analyze the differences
among means. ANOVA was developed by the
statistician Ronald Fisher.
When do we use Anova?
 used to determine whether there are any
statistically significant differences between the
means of two or more independent groups.
