Problem 1: A principal at a certain school claims that the students in his school are above average
intelligence. A random sample of thirty students IQ scores have a mean score of 112. Is
there sufficient evidence to support the principal’s claim? The mean population IQ is 100 with
a standard deviation of 15. (Take alpha as 0.05 if not given)
Problem 2: Blood glucose levels for obese patients have a mean of 100 with a standard deviation of
15. A researcher thinks that a diet high in raw cornstarch will have a positive or negative effect on
blood glucose levels. A sample of 30 patients who have tried the raw cornstarch diet have a mean
glucose level of 140. Test the hypothesis that the raw cornstarch had an effect.
Problem 3:
The prevalence of cigarette smoking among American adults was 21.1%. Data on prevalent smoking
in n=3,536 participants who attended the seventh examination of the Offspring in the Framingham
Heart Study indicated that 482/3,536 = 13.6% of the respondents were currently smoking at the time
of the exam. Is there evidence of a statistically lower prevalence of smoking in the Framingham
Offspring study as compared to the prevalence among all Americans?
Problem 4:
The average amount of time boys and girls ages 7 through 11 spend playing sports each day is
believed to be the same. An experiment is done, data is collected, resulting in the table below. Both
populations have a normal distribution.
Is there a difference in the mean amount of time boys and girls ages 7 through 11 play sports each
day? Test at the 5% level of significance.
Problem 5:
A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of hypnotism in reducing pain. Results for
randomly selected subjects are shown in the table below. The “before” value is matched to an “after”
value, and the differences are calculated. The differences have a normal distribution.
Are the sensory measurements, on average, lower after hypnotism? Test at a 5% significance level.
Problem 6:
Two types of medication for hives are being tested to determine if there is a difference in the
proportions of adult patient reactions. 20 out of a random sample of 200 adults given
medication AA still had hives 30 minutes after taking the medication. 12 out of another random
sample of 200 adults given medication BB still had hives 30 minutes after taking the medication. Test
at a 1% level of significance.
Problem 7:
A machine fills milk bottles, the mean amount of milk in each bottle is supposed to be 32 Oz with a
standard deviation of 0.06 Oz. Suppose the mean amount of milk is approximately normally
distributed. To check if the machine is operating properly, 36 filled bottles will be chosen at random
and the mean amount will be determined.
(a). If an α = .05 test is used to decide whether the machine is working properly, what should the
rejection criterion be?
(b). Find the probability of a type II error when the true mean is 32.03
Problem 8:
Suppose that a married couple is selected at random from a certain population of married couples. and
that the joint distribution of the height of the wife and the height of her husband is a bivariate normal
distribution. Suppose that the heights of the wives have a mean of 66.8 inches and a standard
deviation of 2 inches. the heights of the husbands have a mean of 70 inches and a standard deviation
of 2 inches. and the correlation between these two heights is 0.68. Determine the probability that the
wife will he taller than her husband.
