PHYSICAL EDUCATION

It is an integral part of the

educational program which is
designed to promote the
optimum dev’t of an individual
through participation in
properly selected physical
activities.

Physical Development
Physical Development refers
to physical well-being, use of
the body, muscle control, and
appropriate nutrition, exercise,
hygiene, and safety practices.
Early health habits lay the
foundation for lifelong healthy
living.

Mental
Development
Mental Development
The individual develops his
mental capacities as learns the
mechanical principles underlying
movement as he acquired
knowledge and understanding of
rules and strategies of games and
sports, and as he discovers ways
of improving his movements in
gymnastics and dance.

Moral and
Spiritual
Development
For many years,
character (or
MORAL moral)
DEVELOPME
NT
development has
been cited as one
of the many
benefits of an
effective Physical
Education
program.
Essentially, character
development is about helping
students to become better
human beings, as it emphasizes
MORAL
moral traits such as kindness,
DEVELOPME
NT
respect and fairness :

[1, 2]. Physical education has

been recognized as “probably
the most significant physical
activity context for developing
moral character”
[3]. Thus, as physical educators
we have a huge opportunity to
support the development of the
MORAL whole-student – physically,
DEVELOPME intellectually, socially, affectively,
NT and possibly even spiritually. This
is where terms such as
‘sportspersonship’ and ‘fair play’
come into use, as many PE
teachers and sports coaches
around the world try urge
students to model the behavior
expected of participants in sport
and physical activity
[4].By promoting
desirable moral traits
there are numerous
MORAL researched benefits for
DEVELOPME pupils, such as lower
NT stress levels, increased
resilience and self-
awareness, decreased
alcohol and drug related
problems, and improved
academic achievement,
to name just a few
[5]. But at its most primitive
level, promoting good character
is simply the right thing to do.
MORAL Good character is good for its
DEVELOPME own sake. It’s not about being
NT righteous, or about being
perfect. It’s about helping each
other to develop good habits in
order to bring out the best in
each other both inside and
outside of sport and physical
activity.
In order to effectively incorporate character
education in physical education lessons, there are
several considerations:

FITNESS
It is a condition in

HEALTH RELATED
Components focus on
factors that promote
optimum health and prevent
the onset of disease and
problems associated with
inactivity.
4 COMPONENTS
OF HEALTH
RELATED FITNESS
1. CARDIOVASCULAR
FITNESS

It is the ability of the heart (cardio) and

circulatory system (vascular) to supply
oxygen to muscles for an extended
period of time. CARDIOVASCULAR is
also called CARDIORESPIRATORY
(lungs) fitness. Usually the mile run or
some continuous fitness activity is used
to asses cardiovascular fitness.
2. MUSCULAR STRENGTH and
ENDURANCE
MUSCULAR STRENGTH refers to the
maximum amount of force a muscle can exert
against an opposing force. A one-time
maximum lift using weights.
MUSCULAR ENDURANCE refers to the
ability of the muscle to work over an extended
period of time without fatigue. Push-ups and
sit-ups for one minute is commonly used in
fitness testing of muscular endurance.
FLEXIBILITY
Is the ability to move a body
part through a full range of
motion (ROM) at a joint. The
sit-and-reach is commonly
used to determine flexibility.
BODY COMPOSITION
Is the ratio of body fat to lean
body mass (including water,
bone, muscle, and connective
tissue.) Having too much fat
tissue is a risk factor for
cardiovascular diseases,
diabetes, cancer, and arthritis.
Health related fitness also
• increases muscle tone and
strength;
• decreases susceptibility to
injuries and illness;
• improves bone mineral
density;
Health related fitness also
• Improve posture;
• Increases efficiency of the
respiratory and circulatory
system;
• decreases risk of cardiovascular
disease and stroke;
• Improves blood pressure;
Health related fitness also
• decreases risk of diabetes and some
cancers;
• improves self-esteem and self-
confidence;
• decreases body fat and improves
metabolism; and
• increases energy level and academic
achievement.
