s.Laughner
• Publisher: First published in 2008 by Cambridge University Press
• This is a handbook for managers of language teaching
organizations such as directors and assistant directors of
studies ,academic directors and school owners

• This book provides an introduction to key concepts required

by managers of language teaching organizations, covering
topics from strategic and operational financial
management ,sales and marketing and customer service
through to academic and human resource management
• Book is all about opening ,equipping and running a
language school professionally

• Management is tackled from different angles and seen

from varied perspectives
BODY/SUMMARY

• Book is divided into ten chapters ,consisting Of 288 pages

• It is a concise reference book carefully organized with cross

referencing to link the integrated processes of management
and supplemented by case studies and vignettes, all of which
relate to real life situations in actual language teaching
organizations
• Case studies and vignettes give the reader a deeper
understanding of the chapter theme ,offer fresh ideas, and
may provide possible parallels with their own organizations

• Each chapter is interspersed with tasks which not only aid

the learning but also enables readers to personalize the
practices to their own work
• There are also reflection notes throughout the book which
invite the reader to analyze each of the topics discussed
and how they are practiced in their own organizations

• Book has covered all aspects of running an LTO ,from the

financial and marketing side of the business to recruitment,
performance management and staff motivation
• Each chapter is broken down into various components
related to the main topic for example The marketing and
sales chapter deals with the strategic marketing ,finding out
what the customers want, marketing mix, and marketing
plans.

• There is also a brief introduction to each chapter and

auseful thought provoking conclusion
CONCLUSION
• This book clearly demonstrates what a huge difference
good managers make to the business, its customers and the
employees

• Management is a skill which can be learnt and the book

provides all the necessary tools with the focus on predictive
rather than reactive management.
• The only criticism is that the book presents an LTO utopia,
far removed from reality. And readers may feel that the
aims are unachievable and be left with a sense of
desperation about their current working condition

• Another point is that the presentation is fairly dull ,the text

is dense and there is constant referral to separate pages for
tables, explanations and additional information which is
frustrating.
• All in all ,it is a really useful reference book and I would
definitely recommend this text to all new managers in the
ELT industry as well as common teachers who are going
to become managers in future.
