 CHOOSING THE BEST SMART VOICE
ASSISTANT
• They might all have a similar design, and they might even sound the same
from far away, but the technology that goes into smart home assistant
speakers can actually be very different depending on the brand you chose.

• Smart Speakers are easy to use and come with a well known in-home voice
assistant such as Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, or Cortana.

• Depending on the importance you give to sound quality, sound can or cannot
be a deciding factor at the time of purchasing your smart speaker.
Meet Amazon Alexa

“Alexa is an intelligent personal assistant developed by Amazon, made popular by the

Amazon Echo and the Amazon Echo Dot devices developed by Amazon”

CAPABLE OF,
 VOICE INTERACTION
 MUSIC PLAYBACK
 PROVIDING REAL TIME INFORMATION
 CONTROLS SEVERAL SMART DEVICES SUCH AS HOME AUTOMATION
SYSTEMS
Hey Alexa…
 Amazon Alexa, also known simply as Alexa, is a virtual assistant AI
technology developed by Amazon, first used in the Amazon Echo smart
speakers developed by Amazon Lab126.

 It is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting

alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, and providing weather,
traffic, sports, and other real-time information, such as news.

 Alexa can also control several smart devices using itself as a home
automation system.

 Users are able to extend the Alexa capabilities by installing "skills"

(additional functionality developed by third-party vendors, in other settings
more commonly called apps such as weather programs and audio features).
The History of Voice
Voice recognition technology was around long before Apple’s Siri debuted in 2011. At the Seattle World’s Fair

Assistants
in 1962, IBM presented a tool called Shoebox. It was the size of a shoebox and could perform mathematical
functions and recognize 16 spoken words as well as digits 0-9.

In the 1970s, scientists at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — with the substantial
support of the United States Department of Defense and its Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
(DARPA) — created Harpy. It could recognize 1,011 words, which is about the vocabulary of a three-year-old.

Once organizations came up with inventions that could recognize word sequences, companies began to build
applications for the technology. The Julie doll from the Worlds of Wonder toy company came out in 1987 and
could recognize a child’s voice and respond to it.

Throughout the 1990s, companies like IBM, Apple, and others created items that used voice recognition.

Conclusion
 So which personal assistant is the best? Well as always with these things, there isn't an easy answer
and it depends what you are looking for to suit your needs.

 Google Assistant is very impressive. It can handle multiple queries at once, personalised results by
recognising a voice profile and it has the power of Google search behind it, making it very accurate.
The wake words aren't very personal though, it isn't compatible with as many apps and services as
Alexa and it isn't as funny as Siri.

 Amazon Alexa isn't as dynamic as Google Assistant, or as smart, but it is compatible with hundreds
of thousands of services and apps, the Alexa wake word is personal and customisable and it has
features like Alexa Calling.
