INTRODUCTIO
N
 The April 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine
was the product of a flawed Soviet reactor design coupled with serious
mistakes made by the plant operators

 The accident destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor, killing 30 operators and

firemen within three months and several further deaths later

 The Chernobyl disaster was a unique event and the only accident in the
history of commercial nuclear power where radiation-related fatalities
occurred

 According to the Former Soviet Union President Gorbachev, the Chernobyl

accident was an important reason that led to the fall of the Soviet Union
LOCATION
The Chernobyl Power Complex, lying about 130 km north of Kiev,
Ukraine, and about 20 km south of the border with Belarus
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

 Nuclear energy is created by splitting apart certain types of large isotopes, called fissile
isotopes.

 Isotopes are variations of an element that have different numbers of neutrons, and some are
more stable than others.

 A fissile isotope breaks apart when a neutron hits it, and even once in a while on its own.

 When it breaks apart, that’s called nuclear fission, and it’s the isotope’s way of trying to
become more stable.

 When it does, kinetic energy that’s converted to heat is released.

 And that energy is ultimately what powers an electrical grid.
