    CHERNOBYL

    The Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which
    occurred on April 26, 1986, is one of
    the most devastating events in the
    history of nuclear energy and one of the
    l párrafo worst environmental and humanitarian
    disasters of the 20th century.

    The explosion happened in reactor


    number 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear
    plant, located near the town of Pripyat
    in northern Ukraine (then part of the
    Soviet Union).

    This disaster is considered the most


    severe nuclear accident in history due
    to the magnitude of radiation released
    and its long-lasting consequences.
    CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT
    The reactor overheated during a
    nighttime safety test, during which
    several emergency systems were disabled.

    The test attempted to simulate a power


    outage to see how the reactor would
    respond, but operators made critical
    mistakes, deactivating automatic control
    and safety systems.

    The reactor's power increased


    uncontrollably, causing a buildup of
    steam.

    Immediate Consequences
    The explosion released an estimated
    amount of radiation between 100 and
    400 times higher than the atomic bombs
    dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

    The radiation contaminated the air and


    soil within hundreds of kilometers.

    Leading to the need to monitor radiation


    levels in many parts of the continent.
    IMPACT ON HEALTH
    The first to die were plant workers and
    firefighters who arrived at the site
    without adequate protection and suffered
    lethal doses of acute radiation.

    developed other types of cancer and
    illnesses due to radiation.

    Chernobyl is remembered as an example
    of the dangers and challenges associated
    with nuclear energy. The disaster
    contributed to the dissolution of the
    Soviet Union by exposing government
    opacity and incompetence.

    The Chernobyl disaster is a reminder


    of the importance of transparency,
    strict regulation, and responsibility
    in handling nuclear energy and
    other potentially dangerous
    resources.
