India’s Growing Waste

With rapid urbanization the country is facing massive waste management

challenge.

• Over 377 million urban people live in 7,935 towns and cities and generate
62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste per annum.
• Only 43 million tonnes (MT) of the waste is collected, 11.9 MT is treated
and 31 MT is dumped in landfill sites.

Solid Waste Management (SWM) is one among the basic essential services
provided by municipal authorities in the country to keep urban centre's
clean. However, almost all municipal authorities deposit solid waste at a
dump yard within or outside the city haphazardly.
Waste management rules in India are based on
the principles of
• sustainable development
• precaution and
• polluter pays.
These principles mandate municipalities and
commercial establishments to act in an
environmentally accountable and responsible
manner—restoring balance, if their actions
disrupt it.
The solid waste policy in India specifies the
duties and responsibilities for hygienic waste
management for cities and citizens of India.
This policy was framed in September 2000,
based on the March 1999 Report
Reports :-

• A report by IIT Kanpur (2006) found the

potential of recovering at least 15 per
cent or 15,000 MT of waste generated
every day in the country.
• ASSOCHAM report
India is generating 130 million tonnes
of e-waste as of 2018,
a dramatic increase from the 93.5
million tonnes of 2016.
Prediction :-
By 2020, India is expected to generate
260 million tonnes of e-waste
Top Waste Generating Cities In India
According to a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)
report,

• Maharashtra tops by generating over 26,820

tonnes/day
India’s Contribution To The World’s Growing
Waste

over 3,500 tonnes of plastic waste every day, with cities like,
New Delhi Chennai Kolkata Mumbai Bengaluru Ahmedabad
Hyderabad.
Researchers say,

• India pumps around 0.6

tonnes of plastic waste
into the oceans
annually.
• It is the 12th biggest
plastic polluter in the
world and .,
• Ranked 10th when it
comes to the
generation of municipal
solid waste.
1.7 million tonnes of
electronic and electrical
equipment annually and
is the fifth biggest
producer of e-waste in
the world.

Methods used for the safe disposal of waste

• Segregation.
The waste is segregated before it is disposed of.  various types
of bins are used to segregate glass, metals, paper, cloth etc.
and each type is handled separately by reusing them,
recycling them or disposing
• Open Dumping.
In this method waste materials are dumped in open low lands
far away from the city. This method is not environment
friendly.
Small Step…..
• For greener future, waste segregation is the need
of the hour.

*means keeping wet and dry wastes separately, so that  dry can be e
recycled and wet waste can be composted
