Rigveda -consist of various hymns.
-Said to be the oldest book in Sanskrit or
any Indo-European language.
Yajurveda -collection of sacrificial rites.
-guidebook for priests who execute
sacrificial acts.
Samaveda -collection of spiritual hymns used as
musical notes.
-contains melodies and chants.
Atharvaveda -contains charms and spells.
-different from other three Vedas.
-Some scholar did not considered this as
a part of Vedas

social classes
• four “ashramas” or
stages of life

bead,alms bowl and a
book.
Vishnu–the Preserver
-have human body,blue colored
skin and four arms with each
hand holding an object represents:
1.Lotus flower-glorious
existence and liberation
2.The Mace-mental and
physical strength
3.The Chakra or Discus-
symbolizes the mind
4.The Conch-the sound “Om”
represents primeval sound of
creation
Shiva-the Destroyer or Judge
-there are several representations. Having a blue face
and throat and his body white
1.Third Eye- wisdom and source of energy
2.Cobra Necklace- Shiva’s
power of destruction
and recreation
3.The Vibhuti- (3 lines
drawn horizontally in
forehead)
wealth,superhuman power.
4.The Trident- three
function of Hindu triumvirate
