A lead acid battery uses lead plates and sulfuric acid to store chemical energy that can be converted back to electrical energy. The electrolyte is hazardous and can cause burns. Lead acid batteries are commonly used in cars and boats. Spent batteries contain toxic lead compounds and acid that can contaminate the environment and harm human health if ingested or contacted. Recycling spent batteries saves resources, energy, and landfill space while creating jobs and protecting the environment and population health. Batteries are collected, transported to smelting facilities, and undergo various recycling stages to recover materials like lead.

A lead acid battery is a electrical storage
device that uses a reversible chemical
reaction to store energy. It uses combination of lead plates and an electrolyte consisting of diluted sulphuric acid to convert electrical energy into potential chemical energy. The electrolyte of lead acid batteries is hazardous to our health and may produce burns if come contact with it. Lead-acid batteries are most frequently used in automobiles, boats and other vehicles. Spent lead acid batteries contain two toxic substances which are lead compounds and acid. When released into the environment, these substances can contaminate air, water and soil. When ingested or contacted by humans, lead and acid can cause both short term and long term health damage. Recycling Although, many components of batteries may be recycled, the primary focus has been on metals recovery especially mercury, silver and cadmium. Advantages of recycling: (i) saves natural resources (ii) saves energy (iii) saves clean air and water (iv) saves landfill space (v) saves money and creates jobs How is battery recycled? The batteries are collected from various sources, like retailers. The batteries are then transported to the smelting facility for further processing. Various stages of recycling are: For residents, private businesses and government agencies Do not dispose lead acid batteries on unattended properties or dumping it at landfills. Instead, take them to battery retailers or wholesalers. Lead acid battery retailers are required to accept used battery from customers at no charge. Protection and improvement of its environmental quality. Protection of its population health. Minimize waste generation. Protect non-renewable natural resources and reduce energy consumption. Creation of a sustainable and regulated system of lead utilization.
