Prenatal Development
 This is the first developmental period in the life span.
 Prenatal or antenatal development is the process in which
an embryo or fetus is carried in the womb during pregnancy.
 Period that ranges from conception to birth.
 It is divided into three periods, or trimesters.
 The shortest and the most important period.
Conception
Fortunate moments!

From this stage, you are already

considered achiever!
Out of 200 million sperm cells
and 5000 eggs.

You won the race! 

The Stages of Prenatal Development

1. Germinal Period
2. Embryonic Period
3. Fetal Period
The Stages of Pre-natal Development
GERMINAL PERIOD
• First 2 weeks after conception.

This includes:
• creation of the zygote;
zygote- the single cell formed from the fusing of a
sperm and an ovum.
• continues cell division; and
• the attachment of the zygote to the
uterine wall
GERMINAL PERIOD
GERMINAL PERIOD
-24 to 30 Hours after fertilization
GERMINAL PERIOD
• 36 hours- the fertilized ovum or zygote
divides into two (2) cells
GERMINAL PERIOD
• 48 hours (2 days)- 2 cells becomes 4 cells.
GERMINAL PERIOD
• 72 hours (3 days)- 4 cells become a small
compact ball of 16-32 cells.
GERMINAL PERIOD

• 96 hours (4 days)
GERMINAL PERIOD
• 4-5 days

Blastocyst- the inner layer cells

that develops during this period,
and later develops into embryo.

Trophoblast- the outer layer

cells provides nutrition and
support for the embryo.
GERMINAL PERIOD
• 6-7 days

Blastocyst attaches to
the wall of uterus.
GERMINAL PERIOD
• 11-15 days
Blastocyst invades into uterine wall and
becomes implanted in it (implantation)
EMBRYONIC PERIOD
• Happens 2 to 8 weeks after conception
• Zygote becomes Embryo
EMBRYONIC PERIOD
The following
development takes
place:

•cell differentiation
intensifies
•life-support systems
for the embryo develop
•organs appear
EMBRYONIC PERIOD
EMBRYONIC PERIOD
Placenta
- is a life-support system that
consists of a disk-shape
group of tissues in which
small blood vessels from
the mother and the
offspring intertwine but not
join.
Umblical Cord
- Contains two arteries and
one vein that connects
the baby to the placenta.
Amnion
- Is a bag or an envelope that
contains a clear fluid in which
the developing embryo floats.
EMBRYONIC PERIOD
At the end of 4 weeks,

• Embryo is 1/4 inch in length

• Heart, digestive system, backbone
and spinal cord begin to form
• Placenta begins developing
• The single fertilized egg is now
10,000 times larger than size at
conception
• about the size of a grain of rice!
EMBRYONIC PERIOD
2nd month (8 weeks)

• Baby's facial features continue to develop.

• Each ear begins as a little fold of skin at the side
of the head.
• Tiny buds that eventually grow into arms and legs
are forming.
• Fingers, toes, and eyes are also forming in the
second month of pregnancy.
• The neural tube (brain, spinal cord, and other
neural tissue of the central nervous system) is
well formed.
• The digestive tract and sensory organs begin to
develop.
• Bone starts to replace cartilage. The embryo
begins to move, although the mother cannot yet
feel it.
• The baby size is like a kidney bean.

FETAL PERIOD
• From 2 months to 7 months after conception.
• Growth and development continues
dramatically during this period.
FETAL PERIOD
3rd month (12 weeks)

• Baby is fully formed, size is about 3 inches and

weighs about 1 ounce.
• Baby has arms, hands, fingers, feet, and toes and
can open and close its fists and mouth.
• Fingernails and toenails are beginning to develop
and the external ears are formed.
• The beginnings of teeth are forming.
• Baby's reproductive organs also develop, but the
baby's gender is difficult to distinguish
on ultrasound.
Arganogenesis- process of organ formation.
• The circulatory and urinary systems are working
and the liver produces bile.
• Baby's most critical development has taken place,
the chance of miscarriage drops considerably after
three months into the pregnancy.
• Baby is like a size of a grape.

FETAL PERIOD
4th month (16 weeks)

• Baby is about 6 inches long

and weighs 4-7 ounces.
• Growth spurt occurs in the
body’s lower parts.
• Prenatal reflexes are
stronger.
• Mother feels arm and leg
movements for the first
time.
• Baby is like the size of an
avocado.
FETAL PERIOD
5th month (20 weeks)

• Baby is about 12 inches

long and weighs close to a
pound.
• Eyes and eyelids are
completely formed.
• Fine layer of head covers
the head.
• Grasping reflex is present.
• Irregular movements occur
and felt by the mother
• Baby is like the size of a
banana.
