Parts of Computer Motherboard

DEFINITION OF TERMS
AGP - Accelerated Graphics Port -
as designed as a high-speed point-to-
point channel for attaching a video
card to a computer system, primarily
to assist in the acceleration of 3D
computer graphics. It was originally
designed as a successor to PCI-type
connections for video cards.
The AGP
DEFINITION OF TERMS

PCI - Peripheral Component

Interconnect -a local bus standard
developed by Intel Corporation.
Most modern PCs include a PCI bus
in addition to a more general ISA
expansion bus
The PCI
DEFINITION OF TERMS

RAM - Random Access Memory it’s an

extremely fast type of computer
memory which temporarily stores all
of the information your PC needs
right now and in the near future.
The RAM and Slot
DEFINITION OF TERMS
ATX – Advance Technology
Extended -The PC motherboard
that superseded the Baby AT design.
The ATX layout rotated the CPU and
memory 90 degrees, allowing full-
length expansions to be plugged into
all sockets.
The ATX Power Connector
DEFINITION OF TERMS
CMOS – Complementary Metal
Oxide-Semi Conductor -
Alternatively referred to as a RTC (real-
time clock), NVRAM (non-volatile
RAM) or CMOS RAM, CMOS is an on-
board, battery powered semiconductor
chip inside computers that stores
information.
The CMOS
DEFINITION OF TERMS

DRAM –Dynamic Random Access Memory

DEFINITION OF TERMS

IDE-Integrated Drive Electronics - is a

standard electronic interface used
between a computer motherboard's
data paths or bus and the computer's
disk storage devices.
The IDE Slot and IDE pin/ribbon
connector
DEFINITION OF TERMS

SATA – Serial Advance Technology

Attachment - is a standard for
connecting and transferring data from
hard disk drives (HDDs) to computer
systems.
The SATA drive
DEFINITION OF TERMS

CPU – Central Processing Unit- is the

electronic circuitry within a computer
that carries out the instructions of a
computer program by performing the
basic arithmetic, logic, controlling and
input/output (I/O) operations specified
by the instructions.
The CPU
Other Terms

•Slots: Slots accommodate

hardware components using raised
ports. The major slots present in a
motherboard are: AGP, PCI and
RAM.
Other Terms

Sockets: Sockets allow users to install

component pieces directly into the
motherboard. The CPU socket is the
most notable example.
Other Terms

•Connections: Connections provide

power via your power supply to your
component parts. These connections are
often pin connections, some of which
are placed in raised sockets (via ATX
connectors).
Other Terms
•Ports- is a connection point or
interface between a computer and an
external or internal device. Internal
ports may connect such devices as
hard drives and CD ROM or DVD
drives; external ports may connect
modems, printers, mice and other
devices.
The Ports
Northbridge is an Intel chipset that
communicates with the computer
processor and controls interaction
with memory, the Peripheral
Component Interconnect (PCI) bus,
Level 2 cache, and all Accelerated
Graphics Port (AGP) activities.
Northbridge communicates with the
processor using the frontside bus
(FSB).
Northbridge/Southbridge chipset
architecture designs, the Southbridge
is the chip that controls all of the
computers I/O functions, such as USB,
audio, serial, the system BIOS, the ISA
bus, the interrupt controller and the
IDE channels. In other words, all of the
functions of a processor except
memory, PCI and AGP.
