Defining Craft

Craft
Pronunciation: /krɑːft /

NOUN
An activity involving skill in making things
by hand and requires some particular kind
of skilled work
History of Craft

• Crafting is an ancient practice that is


perhaps as old as the human civilization
itself
• Historically, Concentrate in urban centers
and formed guilds
• The need to be permanently involved in the
exchange of goods
• An art that began out of need and
necessity of man to create objects for his
own use.
Craft Association

• In USA, the American Craft Council was founded in


1943 by Aileen Osborn Webb. No other organization
has played a more important role nationally in the
history of American crafts than the American Craft
Council as the pioneer of craft association.

• In Indonesia, appreciation to local craft industry began


on April 1999 by the beginning of INACRAFT (Indonesia
Handicraft Trade Fair). It has developed its own
character as the right showcase to promote handicraft
products for entrepreneurs, exporters, craftsmen from
Indonesia and handicraft producing countries within
Asia.

Resources

As in 2006, the resources growth of


creative industry subsector stated that
craft showed -8.72%.

But the the resources number stated


that craft industry showed 31.07%
resources in 2006
Export Activities

• 2000-2006: craft industry export rate reached


32,44%

• 2008-2012: the growth rate of craft industry


reached 5.61% per year

•Export destination: Amerika Serikat (43,32%),


Japan (11,78%), UK (5,03%), Germany (3,70%), and
Australia (3,14%)

• 2012: craft industry export reached US$ 696,33


million

• 2013: It decreased to US$ 446,41 million due to


the declining of global economic activities

Social Impact

• People who can’t attend formal school, disable


people, people who can’t work in formal sector,
and jobless people get income from craft industry.
The Program
1. Developing SMESCO building as the center of craft in Indonesia
2. Training program for people in rural area to get an ability to make
some product and spread it in internet by social media or website.

Recommendation
1. Increasing the event in SMESCO to get more attention, publicity, and
visitor (They also have to manage their own social media)
2. Not only train the people in rural area, but also send them to school.
It’s one of the way to build a young generation in Indonesia
3. The company have to manage their CSR more evenly to spread all
over Indonesia
4. Make another big local regular special event outside Jakarta, to
provide the other city
5. Government have to more concern about the people who want to
join the international festival, have the very good product but have no
budget to go abroad
6. Make the event regularly between two countries. The other country
event in Indonesia or Indonesian event in the another country. And
they have to encourage the event to get the awareness from the local
people
