Introduction
A Hundred Hands, a Bengaluru-based NGO, advocates for the preservation and promotion of
India's rich heritage of handmade crafts. Founded in 2010 by sisters Mala and Sonia Dhawan, the
organization has expanded from hosting exhibitions on their doorstep to a network of hundreds
of members. These members are individual artists and non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
that support artisans, all working toward the same goal of empowering these skilled craftspeople
and promoting their self-sufficiency.
A Hundred Hands achieves this goal through a variety of initiatives. They hold annual
exhibitions in major Indian cities including Bengaluru, Kochi, Coimbatore, and Mumbai. These
exhibitions serve a dual purpose: they allow artisans to showcase their work and directly connect
with potential customers, while also providing valuable insights into current market trends. This
interaction enables artisans to better understand customer preferences and adapt their craft
accordingly.
Under NIFT’s Craft Cluster Initiative, the college organized Artisan Awareness Week, which was
a milestone event organized at NIFT Bangalore 2024. Craft Bazaar is a successful innovation of
NIFT to bridge the gap between rural craftsmen, urban affluent consumers, and professional
designers. It aims to honor India's rich cultural legacy by presenting various handicrafts and
handlooms produced by several artisans. At the NIFT Bangalore campus, a Craft Bazaar was
organized in collaboration with ‘A Hundred Hands’ – a Non-Profit Organisation. ‘A Hundred
Hands’ is a platform for artists and crafts persons to interact with discerning patrons and sell
directly to them.
2
The Artisan Awareness Week (AWW) and the Craft Bazar commenced on 7 February 2024.
While the AWW was conducted for 3 consecutive days, the Craft Bazaar went on for 5
consecutive days. The 3-day teaching session in the AWW was about both handloom and
handicraft. Each day was divided into three sessions each to create awareness among the artisans.
The government policy known as "Make in India" aims to support local production and
craftsmanship, and this event was promoting this very initiative by the Government of India.
Artists from all around the nation showcased and sold their creations at ‘The Craft Bazar’, which
featured everything from modern jewellery and home décor to traditional textiles and pottery.
Visitors could also purchase the creations of local artists to show support for them and learn
about the complex processes involved in making these one-of-a-kind artifacts. Celebrating
India's artistic traditions was lively, with seminars, exhibitions, and cultural performances
featured on most occasions. This was also an event of collaboration with designers and artisans
for the future of handlooms in the international market.
Purpose of Craft Bazaar and AWW: NIFT organizes Craft Bazaar each year intending to
benefit the artisans of various handloom and handicraft sectors. This initiative provides the
artisans with a common platform to enhance operational efficiency and display their authentic
crafts and handloom products directly to customers. The workshop is intended to improve
artisans' and weavers' competitive edge in the market.
Artisans engage with NIFT Faculty and Students to exchange knowledge on design
comprehension, market dynamics, branding, and leveraging social media for marketing. Based
on studies conducted by students in the semester, gaps and areas needing improvement are
identified, forming the foundation of this exposure workshop. The workshop enables artisans to
grasp urban market dynamics, enhance their understanding of current trends, and explore new
market opportunities.

1. Stall Setup: Upon arrival, I helped Ms. White (last name unknown) decorate the Kids
Carnival and Games Stall. This stall offered a variety of games and puzzles designed to entertain
people of all ages.
2. Procurement: I was tasked with acquiring both chocolates for immediate use as game
winners' prizes and a stock of stationery supplies for future use across various stalls and display
areas.
3. Poster Preparation: Working with Pavi Shetty and Tushita Mitra, I cut and pinned a large
poster to a designated display frame. These posters advertised the various events taking place at
the Craft Bazar, as well as the artists who would be performing there.
4. Stall Management: I was tasked with managing the Kids Carnival and Games Stall alongside
Saurabh Katiyar. We set up a system in which volunteers took turns overseeing the stall, ensuring
a consistent presence and the ability to engage with young visitors.
5. Registration Assistance: In addition to working at the games stall, I spent some time
volunteering at the registration desk. During this time, I was assisted by Gaurav Kumar and
Mouli Aggarwal.

1. Meeting and Inviting the Artisans – Under the MFM department’s Cluster Initiative, I along
with my classmates visited the Gottigere, a place south of Bangalore, Karnataka. Karnataka has a
strong legacy of handloom weaving, with different regions specializing in textiles. Some of
Karnataka's most well-known handloom items include Ilkal sarees, Kasuti embroidery, and
Mysore silk sarees. While Gottigere does not have direct handloom clusters, it is part of
Karnataka's greater cultural environment, which includes artisanal solid communities that weave
and produce textiles.
2. Learning alongside the Artisans – I attended the first session of Artisan Awareness Week
along with the artisans who were invited by MFM students during our cluster visit to Gottigere.
The first session on the first day was a joint session about handicrafts and handlooms. The
session started with a welcome address by our respected Director – Dr. Yathindra Lakkanna.
Addressing the artisans, our beloved Director mentioned that this is a milestone program of the
campus funded by the Director Commissioner of Handicrafts. The investments are raised under
the Handicraft Development Scheme. Stressing the need for this workshop to the artisans, he
mentioned that they are all skilled, but they need to learn about the trends of tomorrow and what
products to make in the future, and with this workshop, the students will help them with the
future trends. He stressed that the weavers have mastered their skills, but students will tell them
about the trends. Hence, the artisans should not consider this a lecture but a collaboration. During
this workshop, he mentioned that the artisans would learn to analyze export orders. He pointed
out to the artisans that the future market is the young market, and understanding their minds will
help them make better products for the young consumer. Lastly, he said that NIFT, as an institute,
teaches students and helps the entire handicraft community grow.
3. Help with the stall – In the Craft Bazaar in collaboration with ‘A Hundred Hands’ several
stalls were set up to promote. I was helping in one such stall and supporting Corinna Ma’am,
who had set up a stall. Initially, I was helping her set up this stall. It was a kid's game stall which
was super fun with activities and games such as throw the ring, puzzle solving, etc. I helped at
the registration desk on all the days. Anyone who came to the stall, I registered their name and
collected the fees for the games.

Responses and Challenges of the event:
1. The Artisans from the Gottigere cluster were selling handmade pure silk sarees. The maximum
footfall at their stalls was the students of NIFT. However, since these students don’t have earning
capacity yet, the sales of these sarees were low. Hence concluded that the target audience was
low. But there were other people apart from the NIFT student who visited the Craft Cluster and
Artisan Awareness Week. People who had earlier attended ‘Hundred Hands’ before were
informed about this event. These customers also visited the stalls hence concluding marketing for
the event was done well. People from in and around Bangalore visited the eve and these were the
kind of customers who increased the sale of the products displayed by the artisans as they had
purchasing power.
2. On average the event registered some 100-150 individuals apart from the artisans, students, or
faculty on each day.
3. The Kids Games stall saw a smaller number of footfalls. Throughout the day the customers
came for the event but they didn’t bring their children along. Mostly friends and acquaintances
visited this stall. This was an engagement stall and saw roughly 10-15 people who visited for fun
games and activities. Also, the Store was placed words the far end of the
Learnings:
1. Challenges of the Artisans – Such events are important as they allowed me to interact with
the artisans. We got to know about the hardships that artisans face due to advancements in
technology and globalization. Their art is getting lost amidst the global players in the fashion
space. It is becoming more and more difficult for them to sell their product and due to low funds,
they are not able to make ends meet sometimes.
2. Rich Culture of Karnataka - We also learned about the craft cluster and handloom cluster
existing in Karnataka. It was enriching to learn about the weaving process and the silk
saree-making process.
3. Promoting the Artisans – We got to know that most of the artisans are fairly unaware of the
policies that the government of India has made to promote them and their products to customers.
Most of the artisans are unaware of what these policies are and how they can be leveraged to
6
promote their products in the market. This event helped the artisans to learn about these policies
which will eventually help them in the future.
4. Networking - We got to connect and network with ‘A Hundred Hands’. It was personally
overwhelming for me to learn the good amount of work that the NGO and many such NGOs are
doing to help the artisans. It was great to collaborate and learn about their initiatives.
5. Learning Opportunity – The whole event was a learning opportunity for me. Listening to the
speakers address the artisans gave me immense knowledge about the whole ‘Make in India’
initiative and its policies. This will help me to impart this knowledge to any other artisan that I
meet in the future.
6. People Management – Our volunteering activity at the stall was another task that helped us
understand how to manage and engage with every customer. It taught us customer focus and
improved our customer understanding.

3. SPECTRUM
Introduction
Spectrum is a thrilling two-day occasion that NIFT organised on the 7th and 8th of March.
Throughout Spectrum, students exemplify dedication and passion as they meticulously plan the
event. They dedicate their time and efforts to every aspect of the preparation process, from
actively seeking sponsorships to embellishing the campus with detailed decorations. In addition
to their coordinating roles, they eagerly participate in the festivities, eager to display their talents.
Moreover, they extend invitations to nearby colleges to ensure that the spirit of Spectrum is
shared with other students in Bengaluru. Activities include lively sports competitions,
captivating group and solo dance performances, musical singing displays, fashion shows,
film-making contests, entertaining prank events, and pitch competitions.
The selected theme for Spectrum 2024, "Bengalururizz", aimed to capture the essence of the
city's vibrant street fashion and the unique style, or "rizz," exhibited by its residents. Among the
various events, the festival also included a variety of stalls offering a range of items, from
delicious cuisine to stylish clothing and accessories. These stalls were carefully curated by a
combination of students, local entrepreneurs, and sponsors, adding a personal touch to the event.
Notably, sponsors such as New Me Asia and Red Bull garnered attention, injecting the festival
with their distinctive energy and excitement.
12
Figure 2: Judges and participants of the event ‘Pitch’.
Red Bull proudly sponsored the "Pitch" competition at Spectrum'24, hosted by NIFT Bengaluru.
Participants demonstrated their creativity by presenting random products to judges in exchange
for Red Bull cans. Observing their quick thinking and innovative concepts was inspiring as they
competed to impress the judges. Meanwhile, Red Bull's involvement went beyond sponsorship;
they also introduced an exciting contest.
13
Figure 3: Participants of the event ‘Pitch’, pitching their idea to the judges.
Teams from various locations would embark on a daring journey across Europe, relying solely
on Red Bull cans as currency. This challenged their resourcefulness and sense of adventure, as
they exchanged cans for essentials such as food and transportation, leading to a final dash to
Berlin. Red Bull's decision to sponsor events like Spectrum'24 was strategic as it tapped into
college students' vibrant energy and enthusiasm, providing an ideal platform to promote their
unique contest. Thus, Red Bull engaged with young audiences through "Pitch" and their
adventurous contest, showcasing creativity and vitality in action.

Learnings:
15
we celebrated this diversity and encouraged participants to leverage their unique
perspectives to address societal challenges creatively.

Challenges:
1. Technical issues
Given the virtual nature of the webinar, ensuring the viewers are not facing any connectivity
issues, audio/video glitches, or difficulty navigating the webinar platform was of concern.
Overcoming these hurdles required adaptability and quick troubleshooting skills to ensure a
