component
• The tower was designed
by Skidmore, Owings and
Merrill (SOM), which also
designed the Willis
Tower (formerly the
Sears Tower)
in Chicago and the One
World Trade
Center in New York City.
Burj Khalifa uses the
bundled tube design of
the Willis Tower,
invented by Fazlur
Rahman Khan. Due to its
tubular system,
proportionally only half
the amount of steel was
used in the construction.
• The concept of this building is inspired from a
flower ‘HYMENOCALLIS’. The HYMENOCALLIS, of
Amaryllidaceae botanical family is a beautiful flower
found mostly in Mexico and in southern US states
such as Texas.
• This flower has thin white petals elegantly tapering
outwards from central core.
• Here is a picture of Hymenocallis.

Foundation
The tower foundations
consist of a solid, 3.7-
meter (12.1-foot) thick pile
supported raft poured
utilizing 12,500 cubic
meters (m3) (16,350 cubic
yards, yd3) of C50 cube
strength (7.25-ksi) self-
consolidating concrete
(SCC). Reinforcement was
typically spaced at 300 mm
(12 inches) on center in
the raft,

Super structure
• per day expenditure of burj was approx. 1 crore dollar so it was very
necessary to complete this project with in time.
• In this project time is money.
• For speed construction, world largest and heaviest crane were used to
uplift material.(26 ton without load)
