“ Types of memories ”

# MANAV SHARMA
Types of memories :-
1] Primary memory.

2] secondary memory.
Primary memory
 All those types of computer memories that
are directly accessed by the processor using
data bus are called primary memory
 Primary memory is also known as
main memory or may also called as
Internal memory
Type of primary memory
 RAM (Random access memory).

 ROM (Read only memory).

RAM (Random access memory)
 The Word “RAM” stands for “random access
memory” the read and write memory of a
computer is called RAM. The user can write
information into RAM. The user enters his
program and data into RAM. It is a temporal
storage memory. RAM is volatile that only retains
all the data as long as the computer powered. It is
the fastest type of memory.
Types of RAM
 Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM): It is
another form of RAM used as Main Memory, it
retains information in transistors for a short period (a
few milliseconds) even though the computer powered.
The Data is Refreshed Periodically to maintain in it.

 Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) : It uses

more transistors as compared to DRAM. It is faster
compared to DRAM due to the latching arrangement,
and they use 6 transistors per data bit as compared to
DRAM, which uses one transistor per bit.
ROM (Read only memory)
 ROM is the long-term internal memory. ROM is
“Non-Volatile Memory” the information stored
in it is not lost even if the power supply goes off.
It is used for permanent storage of information.
ROM is an essential chip with permanently
written data or programs. ROMs are much
cheaper as compared to RAMs when produced
in large volume.
Types of ROM
# PROM(Programmable Read Only Memory): PROM stands for
programmable ROM. Its content can be decided by the user. The
user can store permanent programs, data or any other kind of
information in PROM. Data can not be erased.

# EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory): This

memory type retains its contents until it exposed to intense ultraviolet
light that clears its content. EPROM are used to stored programs
which are permanent but need updating. The research or any
program which on development stage and need update at a regular
interval of time.
# EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read
Only Memory): EEPROM can erased data much faster than
EPROM by first electrical waves in a millisecond. A single
byte of a data or the entire contents of device can be erased
Secondary memory
 Secondary memory is where programs and
data are kept on a long-term basis.
 Any work or project that has to be save for
long term only be saved in secondary
memory devices.
 Common secondary storage devices are
the hard disk and optical disks.
Types of secondary memory
 Hard disk -
^ The hard disk has enormous storage
capacity compared to main memory. The
hard disk is usually contained inside the
case of a computer.

 CD (compact disk).
 DVD (digital versatile disk).
