Global implication
of motivation

• Maslow’s need hierarchy argue that people

start at the physiological level and then move
progressively up the hierarchy in the order:
physiological, safety, social, esteem and
self - actualization.
• Another motivation concept that clearly has a
U.S. bias in the achievement need.
• The view that a high achievement need acts as
an internal motivator presupposes two culture
characteristics—a willingness to accept a
moderate degree of risk and a concern with
performance.
• This combination found is Anglo-American
countries such as the united states, Canada,
and great Britain.
• Equity theory grained a relatively strong
following in the united states.
• U.S. firms expending their operations in china
are learning that motivation concepts that
succeed in the united states don’t always apply
to Chinese employees.
• In china, the three basic needs— sociability,
security, and states—are satisfied through
interpersonal interventions, which is in
contrast to the west, where motivation and
behavior occur in a social vacuum.
