Metals and Non-Metals

In this topic:

• Metals
• Non-metals
• Alloys
• Corrosion of metals
Reactivities of Metals
METALS
Metals
• Most elements in the periodic table are
metals
• Examples of metals:
– Copper
– Aluminium
– Iron
Physical Properties of Metals
Conduct Malleable
Shiny
electricity

High
density
Sonorous
Metals
Conduct
Properties of Metals
Malleable: can beEhammered into
different shapes

Ductile: Can be stretched

E out into wire

Sonorous: make aEringing noise when

struck
Some exceptions
Alkali Metals Mercury

• Sof • Liquid at room

• Low Densities temperature
NON-METALS
Physical Properties of Non-Metals
Poor heat Usually liquids
conductors or gases

Non-
Metals
Poor electrical Brittle
conductors (when solid)
Low melting
point
Some exceptions
Carbon (graphite) Carbon (diamond)

• Extremely hard
• Good conductor
• High melting point
of electricity
ALLOYS
Alloys
Alloy: a mixture of E metals

• Metals can be more useful when mixed with

other metals
Examples:
• Copper + Zinc = Brass
Alloys
Alloy Composition Use
Brass Copper+Zinc •MusicalInstruments
•Ornaments
Bronze Copper+Lead Statues
Solder Lead+Tin Soldering
Mildsteel Iron+Carbon Buildingreinforcement
Stainless Copper+Lead •Knives
steel •Sinks
Alnico Aluminium, Powerfulmagnets
nickel&cobalt
CORROSION OF
METALS
Corrosion of Metals
Metal corrosion: the
E
reaction of metal
with air, water and other substances
• Most metals are reactive
• Others are unreactive and suitable for
jewellery
– Gold
– Silver
Corrosion of Metals
Rusting: the corrosion
E of iron

• Iron reacts with water and oxygen

• The product = iron oxide or rust
OC46: To demonstrate that oxygen
and water are necessary for rusting
• Set up 3 tubes
as in diagram
• Examine
results afer 1
week
Rust Prevention
• Aim: remove exposure to oxygen
• Rust prevention achieved by coating the metal
Reactivities of Metals
• Most metals want to lose electrons to gain a
full outer shell
– This improves stability
• To do so, they react with other substances
• Some metals are more reactive than others
To compare the reactivity of four
metals with water
To compare the reactivity of four
metals with dilute acid
Relative Reactivities
Remember: some metals are more reactive than
others
• Order of reactivity:
– Calcium
– Magnesium
– Zinc
– Copper
