Second Year Science

Chemical Bonding
Types of Bonding
• Elements react with each other to
achieve a full outer orbit of electrons

Two types of bonding

Ionic Covalent
IONIC BONDING
Ionic Bonding
• In order to achieve a full outer shell
– One atom loses electrons
– Another atom gains electrons
• When atoms lose or gain electrons they
become ions
• Opposite charges attract
Ion: atoms with a negative or positive
E
charge
Ionic Bonding
• Sodium wants to lose one electron
Ionic Bonding
• Sodium ion has an overall +1 charge
Ionic Bonding
• Chlorine wants to gain one electron
Ionic Bonding
• Chlorine ion has an overall -1 charge
Ionic Bonding
• Opposites attract so we get sodium chloride
(NaCl)

COVALENT BONDING
Covalent Bonding
Covalent bond: a pair of electrons being
E

Hydrogen Atoms
Covalent Bonding
• Both want to gain one electron to achieve
a full shell
• They overlap shells and share electrons
• They have formed a covalent bond

Hydrogen Molecule
Covalent Bonding: Oxygen

Oxygen Atom
Oxygen

Oxygen Molecule with a double covalent bond

Covalent Bonding: Water
Covalent Bonding: Methane
Properties of Ionic and Covalent
Compounds
Ionic Compounds Covalent Compounds
• Solids • Liquids or gases
• High melting points • Low melting or boiling
• Soluble in water points
• Conduct electricity • Insoluble in water
when molten or • Do not conduct
dissolved in water electricity
