Tennis originated from an earlier game called 'jeu de paume' in France. Over time, racquets were introduced and rules were standardized into modern tennis. The sport became very popular in the late 17th century.

Tennis originated from the French game 'jeu de paume' which was played indoors with the hands. Over time, racquets were introduced and the game moved outdoors and evolved into lawn tennis. The modern rules were established in 1877.

A standard singles tennis court is 78 feet long and 27 feet wide. The net is 36 inches high at the center. There is also a baseline, sidelines and service lines delineating different areas of the court.
