Starting Out the Drama

Session 8 & 9
Starting Out the Drama
Do you still remember yesterdays lecture?
Teaching students speaking through drama can be
successful if teachers and students make preparation of
performing the drama well. Without good preparation,
teacher cannot achieve the goal of teaching speaking
through drama.
Preparation prior to performing drama is important
since in this stage students are asked to share their
opinion, ideas about the drama performance they are
about to perform. Thus, the students are encouraged
to make effective talk in classroom. By doing so, the
teachers have inseminate their willingness/ desire
rather than requirement to talk.
Starting Out the Drama
Teachers can use several method/ tools/
media in making preparation of the drama
performance such as:
1. Using Story as a starting point
2. Using Photograph and Paintings
3. Using Poem
4. Using Games
Using Story as The Starting Point
Here are some steps of preparing drama using
story as the starting point:
1. Give clues about the story that you are going to read
to give the students prior knowledge towards the
story.
2. Make the children engage in listening to your story
by letting them guess/ create the end of the story.
3. After reading the story ask the students to discuss
about the plot (by asking the students to retell the
story) characters, the setting of place and time, and
other elements of the drama.
Using Story as The Starting Point
4. Ask the students to determine the characters
(who wants to be someone/ something as
portrayed in the story)
5. Ask students to prepare the dialogue
corresponds to the characters they played. The
teacher should give advice to the students in
making the dialogue.
6. Ask the students to think when and where they
want to perform the drama.
Using Story as The Starting Point
8. Finally, ask the students to practice
the drama, make rehearsal before
performance, and the last, perform the drama
on stage.
