OVERVIEW
Innovation is at the core of SPRL's business
strategy.
Development and manufacture of latest
technology products for OEMs in Europe, USA, etc.
challenges the enterprise to hone its manufacturing
processes, technology and quality to global
standards. This acts as a catalyst to transform the
entire organization. Not surprisingly, SPR is the
largest exporter of Pistons and Rings from India to
discerning customers, including Ford, Honda, Kia,
Renault, WABCO and has the 'Trading House' status
from Government of India. SPR and USHA are also
amongst the best recognized brand names in the
aftermarket abroad.

COMPANY BACKGROUND
Located in Himalaya House.
3rd Floor .23, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New
Delhi, 110001 India.
Established in year 1963.
Cylinder Liners, Gears, Piston Pins, Pistons,
Piston Rings, Engine Valves( making).
Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturing.

WHAT IS PISTON
It is a mechanical device.
It reciprocates in the cylinder.
It will convert the chemical energy of
fuel into mechanical energy .
Its function is to transfer the energy to
crankshaft by connecting rod

Piston Function
Transfer energy to the crankshaft
Control expansion under warm-up
Chemical energy of fuel is converted in to
mechanical energy

TYPES OF PISTONS

1. Specialloid piston
2. Autothermic piston
3. Invar strut piston
4. Lo-Ex alloy piston

Piston Measurements

New pistons are measured at

dimension H
Used pistons are measured at
widest point
Generally it is measured from
micrometer

Piston Design
Pistons are neither
cylindrical nor round.
Pistons are made with
special materials to
control expansion.
Piston rings have
special functions and
design.

PISTON MANUFACTURING
PROCESS
The pistons are usually manufatured by
means of
1.CASTING : an object made by pouring
molten metal or other material into a
mould
2.FORGING: forging is the operation
where the metal is heated and then a
force is applied to manipulates the
metals in such a way that the required
final shape is obtained.

MANUFACTURING BY
FORGING
1) THE ROD

The pistons begins as a a three meter, solid

aluminium rod. The reason aluminium alloy
is used is that its lightweight, rust-proof,
and easy to cut.
A saw then cuts the rod into smaller pieces
called slugs.

Piston Failure
Analysis

Normal Pistons
Deposits vary from oil
ash, brown, tan, to
black/brown. Light color
denotes higher cylinder
temperatures.
Light scoring is normal,
varnish from blow-by gas
is normal

Heat Seizure
Excessive heat, over
1200F/650C EGT
Lean jetting or
adjustments on carb
Incorrect loading on
propeller allowing
excessive RPM

Lack of Lubrication
Excessive water
ingestion causing loss
of oil film on intake.
Lack of intake air filter
service.
Results in excessive
clearance

Piston Fracture
Complete disassembly
required to remove all
material
Cause from excessive
wear, excessive RPM with
no load, excessive
clearance fitting.

Engine valves

What is engine valve

It is a mechanical element
It is used to admit the fresh air and
escaping the burnt gases into the
atmosphere .
Two types of valve are in cylinder
inlet valve and outlet valve.
These two valves are open and
closed alternately

Types of valve
There are two types of valves are
used in automobiles.
Inlet valve its function is to enter
the fresh air mix fuel in engine
cylinder.
Outlet valve-its function is to passes
the burnt gases in to atmosphere

Overview

TYPES OF RINGS
COMPRESSION RING
The main functions ofcompression ringsare to
seal the combustion chamber from the crankcase
and transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder.

OIL CONSUMPTION RING

MANUFACTURING OF RINGS
1.Green Sand Moulding
2.Continuous Moulding
3.Continuous heat treatment process
4.Double Cam Grinding
5.Diskus Grinding
6.Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) - Ion Plating
7.PVD + Gas Nitriding (GN)
8.Moly Inlaid
9.Semi Inlaid Moly
10.Full Face Composite Plating of Chrome (CPC) - Asymmetrical
ground OD profile
11.Semi Inlaid Composite Plating of Chrome (CPC) - Asymmetrical
ground OD profile
