The Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) provides bleed air, electrical power and acts as a backup power source when the aircraft is on the ground. It is a gas turbine engine located in the tail cone of the aircraft.

The APU FADEC performs start control, normal operation and malfunction monitoring.

The APU is protected by its own automatic fire detection and extinguishing system. Certain batteries and systems must remain on for the fire protection to stay functional.

APU

AUXILIARY POWER UNIT

APU is located in the tail cone of the aircraft. APU
consists of a gas turbine engine driving a DC starter
generator. It supplies bleed air to the Environmental
Control System (ECS), and 28 VDC to the electrical
system. The APU cannot be operated in flight.

APU FADEC performs:
Start control
Normal operation
Malfunction monitoring
Intake air is drawn through a screened inlet duct on
the right rear of the fuselage. Exhaust gases flow
through an exhaust ejector and are discharged
through an upwards pointing outlet at the aft end of
the titanium tail cone.

APU
The APU is protected by its own automatic fire
detection and extinguishing system. If APU is used,
BATTERY MASTER, MAIN, AUX and STBY BATT
should remain ON so that the APU fire protection
system remains functional. Continuity of supply
should be monitored.
The airplane must not be left unattended with the
APU running.

APU
APU fuel is supplied from the left wing collector bay,
through an APU shut-off valve. A gravity fed, APU
driven fuel pump keeps positive fuel pressure to the
APU.
The APU shut-off valve will close if:
PWR switch-light is pushed off
FIRE TEST pushbutton is pushed
APU automatically shuts down
Fire is detected in the tail cone
Aircraft is off the ground

APU
LIMITATIONS
APU is approved for GROUND OPERATION ONLY;
APU must be shutdown prior to take-off;
APU must not be operated unattended;
APU must not be operated during gravity refueling;

7/9

APU
Minimum ambient temperature for APU operation:
- 35C;
Maximum ambient temperature for APU operation:
+50C or ISA+35C, whichever is lower;
With APU inlet louvers installed, APU operation is
limited to +21C maximum ambient temperature;
NOTE:
To verify status of louvers installation, refer to
Technical Log, Briefing Card.
