JOHARI WINDOW

A MODEL of self awareness , personal development, group development and

understanding relationship

INTRODUCTION
The

Johari Window model can also be used to assess

and improve a group's relationship with other groups.

The

Johari Window concept is particularly helpful to

understanding employee/employer relationships
within the Psychological Contract.

The

Johari Window model was devised by American

psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955,
while researching group dynamics at the University
of California Los Angeles.

Johari window, the name of this window is based on

the name of the persons who developed it i.e. Joseph
Luft and Harry Ingham

The Johari Window actually represents information

feelings, experience, views, attitudes, skills, intentions,
motivation, etc within or about a person in relation to
their group, from four perspectives, which are described
below.

1ST QUADRANT
OPEN AREA

Open self/area, 'free area, 'public area', 'arena

Also known as the 'area of free activity
This area consist of the information about you, your values and
beliefs and your experiences which are know to the people
around you.
The details like your name, contact no., material status etc
about an individual belongs to this area.
Here friendship and mutual understanding among people
grows and is highest in this area because as you share more
information with other people, they come closer to you.
Hence it helps in reducing conflicts to almost zero percent.

2ND QUADRANT
HIDDEN AREA
Blind self' or 'blind area' or 'blindspot
This area consist of the things about an individual that are
known to others but not to self.
Blind area reduces when others those who are observing you,
tells you about this habit.
Blind reduces as you start understanding yourself, your
positive and negative points, your strengths and weakness
etc.
As this area reduces from the personality of an individual the
chances of inter-personal conflicts also reduces.

3RD QUADRANT
BLIND AREA
Hidden self' or 'hidden area' or 'avoided self/area' or 'facade'
This area consist of the things about an individual that are
known to self but are hidden from the people in the surroundings.
People keep some secrets about themselves like some incidences,
experiences, their likes and dislikes etc. because they are scared
that if their friends or family come to know about these details
then they might make fun of him.
Sometimes not sharing this hidden information saves person but
it also generates distrust and miscommunication between you and
the people in the surrounding.
This areas also leads to inter-personal conflicts. This area can be
reduced if you reduce the number of secrets and try to open up.

4TH QUADRANT
UNKNOWN AREA
This area includes the values, beliefs and the things about
you which are not known to you and to others.
This is the most volatile area. Here, the person doesnt
know about himself because of lack of experiences and is
not know to others because this part of his personality has
never be told or never been seen by others.
Unknown area is having higher possibilities of interpersonal conflicts.
It contains information, feelings, latent abilities, aptitudes,
experiences etc, that are unknown to the person
him/herself and unknown to others in the group.
This area can be reduced by exchanging thoughts, sharing
experiences etc.
