Q1.

In what ways does your media product use, develop

or challenge forms and Conventions of real media products?
As a whole, my magazine follows the generic conventions of a real music
magazine. Before creating my magazine, I researched all the typical generic
conventions that should be included in a magazine, such as: masthead, cover lines,
main image barcodes etc
I then developed on these conventions by researching similar style genre magazines
and taking note and inspiration from their layout and what was included. When
creating the magazine, I aimed to ensure it looked exactly like a real media product
by sticking to these stereotypical codes and conventions and then inputting my own
ideas to create an original house style and appearance
Although I took a lot of inspiration from Kerrang magazine, for my front cover
page in particular, but only for the masthead and the main image of Biffy Clyro
and I used Trez Cham as my main image look below at the comparison.
Although my magazine is a grime genre magazine I thought it would be
different if I followed another convention of indie for my front cover as I liked
the Kerrang layout a lot better than another rap magazine. it is easy to see the
ways that I have used conventions to make my magazine different and unique.
Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
As my magazine is aimed at a target audience of 15-25 year old, it specifically
targets youth culture. It shows this as I have considered the interests and likes
of my target audience. Because the magazine’s genre is grime, it also
represents a particular youth subculture, one which consists of young people
who love listening to grime music. When considering this, it is also easy to
say that the subculture that is being targeted is also one which consists of
young people who enjoy listening to grime music at night clubs.
They dress in a specific style wearing known brands to most people who like to
listen to grime such as humour, nike, trainer spotter etc type of clothing. Grime is a
really small niche audience . The images that I have included in my magazine have
all been of young people, which represents who the magazine is targeted at, as well
as representing the stereotypical characteristics of these type of people. It also
shows what type of clothes they want and the double page spread is all about what
the upbringing of an upcoming grime star had to deal with. Below are pictures of
classic examples of people act in grime and who listen to grime.
Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
The type of media institution that would produce my media product would be a multi
national media conglomerate (bauer) due to the fact that it is aimed at a particularly
wide audience. I am using this because they will distribute more copies nationally and
internationally therefore my magazine will make more money.
My magazine would be the product of a multinational conglomerate like Bauer.
Niche and independent music shops, as well as local shops and supermarkets
would be considered as distributors for my magazine. These distributors will
make sale of the magazine in order to make money.
My magazine concentrates on many different types of artists within the genre that I
have chosen therefore there is sure to be something of interest for the majority of
my target audience and therefore many people will be interested in purchasing the
product. The magazine will be sold nationally due to the fact that this particular
type of music and artists will be listened to and enjoyed by many nationally. Rather
than an independent publisher I believe this will target a conglomerate company as
it is one of the only grime magazines been made.
Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
After I looked at different types of magazine genres and their codes and
conventions, I had to decide a target audience. Due to the fact that I was creating
a music magazine based on grime, I found that it would be most suitable to target
my magazine at a youth market of 15-25 year olds and take inspiration from
music magazines targeting similar audiences such as vibe and rap up. I took
various ideas from the audience profiles that were created for these similar
magazines and researched a similar age group to myself, finding out about their
likes and interests in order to create a demographic audience profile as a
Photoshop collage for my own magazine, which would relate to the majority of
my target audience.
I used models that represent the generic stereotype of the audience that will read my
magazine a such as artists like Tine Tempah or Dizzie Rascall
Also to know what my target audience would be interested in and what their generic
conventions would be I had do design a questionnaire and handed it out to people I
knew listened to grime music. This helped me massively choose what conventions I
applied in my magazine. Therefore this helped me attract my target audience.
Q6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this project?
While doing this project I used many different technologies all listed below, this
helped me a lot with my project as otherwise it would not represent a generic music
magazine that could be sold by a conglomerate company. I had to use Photoshop
when designing my front cover and contents page which was also good because I had
to crop photos after taking them with the SLR camera, without all of these
technologies my magazine would not be at the same quality. In addition to this I used
quark to design my double page spread.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you
Q7. have learnt in the progression from it to the full project?
In my preliminary task my skills using the technologies on the computer such as Photoshop,
quark etc was no where near as advanced as I came through the preliminary tasks and
developed my skills. Below is both of my preliminary tasks which shows the basic skills I
could use when designing the project.
My skills came on a lot after my preliminary tasks as I fiddled around and got to grips with
all the tools on Photoshop and quark such as, cropping photos and basic just designing a lot
better text which fits in with my generic conventions. I used drop shadows outlines also
using the lasso tool to cut around pictures.
