In what way does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
• My media product challenges forms and conventions of other real media
products because it has a unique idea of a chart magazine and there isn’t
any other chart magazine around so it could go up against other music
magazines that may not have the selling point of my magazine.
• It develops the original conventions of music magazines like ‘X’ and
‘Smash Hits’ but I have adapted them to make my magazine original and
different from other music magazines by giving it a more simple look with
less on the front cover.
• I would say I’ve taken some techniques from these magazine in the sense
of using the main artist as the central dominant image to really focus on
this artist and make them stand out to the target audience.
How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
• I think my magazine mainly focuses on those social groups that like
Pop music. Although my magazine is a chart magazine and could
appeal too other audiences, I wanted to mainly show the Pop side of
the magazine.
• I chose to use a girl on the front holding a
microphone as my central dominant image because
she looks like she could be a Pop artist and I feel that
if I had a boy with a electric guitar on the front,
it wont be giving off the impression that I want. The
Style of this image really fulfills the audiences
expectations of what the magazine is trying to focus
on which is Pop music.
What types of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
• I would want a company that has successful magazines throughout
the company and I think my magazine would be more suited to a
big publishing house because the charts are a weekly thing and I
think my magazine would be successful each week.
• I think I would choose IPC to distribute my media product because
it is a well known company and it would be a good company to
bring a new magazine to. It also distributes well known music
magazine NME which has been around for many years so I think
they would be the best company to make my magazine a success.
Who would be the audience for your
media product?
• My music magazine mainly focuses on girls between the age of
13 – 17 years old.
• I chosen to focus on the younger audience because I feel that there
aren’t a lot of magazine nowadays that have magazine for the
younger generation because Smash Hits is now longer available as a
magazine.
• I have chosen to aim my magazine at girls because I would
associate Pop music as girly and quite cheesy so I could see girls
buying my magazine more than boys.
• However as my magazine is a chart magazine, it does also include
Hip Hop music and others types so although it could attract the
male side if they want to read about the other genre’s that my
magazine includes.
How did you attract/address your
audience?
• I attracted my audience by using Pink as the colour of my
masthead to really appeal to my target audience of girls.
• I also chose to use a girl as my central dominant image with a
girly look to her which will give my audience someone to
aspire to and maybe look up to.
• Also inside my magazine, on my DPS it has an interview with
the artist so my audience may be able to relate to some of the
things that the artist has said or done.
What have I learnt about technologies from the process of constructing a
