going to need more and more leaders. In this global
era Leadership is the most critical business issue.

• For organizations to become competitive,

productive and economically sustainable today there
is a need for the right kind of leadership, with right
thinking.
• The demand for leaders may change from era to era
and from culture to culture, but certain fundamental
qualities like optimism, hard work, persuasiveness,
the ability to listen, and the strength of character
and high standard of conduct are the most common
one.

New Emerging Philosophy of

• Traditionally people viewed leaders as the few
people who are the most talented, who achieved
success in their organisations and who were
rewarded with positions of responsibility. But this
is not the current scenario.

• Shared leadership, Leadership as Relationship,

main themes/skills of new leadership
philosophy.
5
• The Shared Leadership -All of us have
leadership qualities that can be pooled and
drawn upon as needed, when working with
others on vital common issues.
• Leadership as Relationship revolves
around the idea of a network of fluid
relationships and is built on the concepts of
empowerment, participation, partnership,

• Leadership in Community envisions
community as the conceptual setting in

The Leader and the Organization should
operate as a Whole System
• A leader should work at strengthening the organization so
that it continues to create leaders who can sustain the
organization in the context of its purpose- its vision and
values which are its reasons for being.
• Today’s organizations are needed to build a portfolio of
flexible leaders rather than relying on quick-fix
superheroes.
• The portfolio of leaders should collectively have the skills
to lead the organization through different stages. The
ability to build the complementary set of leaders that excel
individually in some areas while collectively delivering on
the specific outcomes needed to accomplish business
strategy is what differentiates companies that are great
from those that are good. 12
Global Leadership
• The ability to work across physical and cultural
boundaries will make a leader effective in
current business world.
• Irrespective the type of business Adaptive
leadership is essential in current business world,
because it brings deep industry knowledge and
focus on the bottom line, along with effective
risk management.
• Present and future leaders of today's
organizations need to acquire a more global
perspective and the competencies to leverage
major growth opportunities in key world markets.13
Global Leadership Competencies
• Frame-Shifting:  Combining self-awareness with
the ability to identify practical similarities and
differences in comparison with others; seeking out
new and unexpected information and balancing it
with more familiar assumptions.
• Cross-Border Relationships: Achieving goals
through building and working with a strong
network of personal relationships.
• Developing Future Leaders: Spreading global
competencies by cultivating leaders who will teach
and inspire others.
14
Global Leadership Competencies
• Inclusive Vision: Creating a vision with both
global and local appeal; engaging employees in a
manner that makes them feel they can make a
meaningful contribution regardless of their
location.
• Building a Third Way: Integrating the
contributions of diverse employees to create and
implement effective strategies, including entirely
new elements.
15
Leadership Development

• The leadership development for the global era

is holistic. It has shifted from individual-
centered to collective-centered.
• The new framework is the intersection among
the community development, organizational
development, and leadership development.
• Community development is the nurturing of a
group's spirit and willingness to work for a
common goal.

16
Leadership Development

• Organizational development is the increase of a

group's capacity to engage in concerted and
effective action to achieve individual & group
goals.
• Leadership development is the growth of
individuals' capacities to facilitate community
development and organizational development. It
aims to develop individuals' abilities to build both
a group's community spirit and its capacity to
engage in effective action.

The Essence of Leadership
• The essence of leadership lies within the
individual. A leader should have a clear
and firm understanding of self, followed
by the knowledge of his role in the
organization and finally the strengths,
weakness and limitations of those he is
supervising.

19
The Essence of Leadership
• Leadership is about having and sharing a vision.
It involves thinking from the mind and from the
heart. It is important to understand every member of
the team and inspire them to work to their potential
in order to achieve the desired result.
• The ability to make decisions is what sets a leader
apart. Even if the situation is worst, the leader
should take it upon oneself to motivate others and
see the bright side of the problem.
• An effective leader is one who leads by examples.

20
The Winning Mantras for Becoming
a Global Leader
A leader should be a catalyst, he should
set aside his point of view, should ask
questions to reach to a new level of
mutual discovery, he should build trust
& respect, he should cultivate an
experimental approach and should
outline and explore possible options to
incorporate the collective thinking of
diverse group members.
21
Conclusion
• Leadership is about behavior. Managing a
group doesn’t make one a leader until
one’s behavior creates an environment of
trust, commitment and service.
• The key to successful leadership lies in the
ability of a leader to learn as he leads.
Continuous learning is essential for an
organization and a leader to survive in
today’s continuously changing business
environment. 22
