INDIAN RAILWAYS
It is an state-owned enterprise. It is operated by Government of India through Ministry of Railways. It is one of the world largest railway network having about 7,500 stations. It provides services for passenger, freight, parcel carrier, catering and tourism, etc. Its operations cover 28 states and 3 union territories and also provides international services to Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

INDIAN RAILWAYS(Cont..) HISTORY


It was first introduced in India on 16th April, 1853 from Bombay to Thane. A British engineer, Robert Maitland Brereton, was responsible for the expansion of railways. Maitland is credited to connect Eastern Railways (Allahabad-Jabalpur) with Great Indian Peninsula Railways. Then it continued with the production of new locomotives and Railway tracks all over the country.

DIVISIONS OF INDIAN RAILWAYS


IR is divided into zones which is further subdivided into divisions, each having its own divisional headquarter. Each of the division is headed by the Divisional Railway Manager(DRM) who reports the General Manager(GM) of the zone. The DRM is assisted by one or two Additional Divisional Railway Managers (ADRM) in pursuing its tasks .

CONTROL ROOM
Railway signalling is the system used to control railway traffic safely, essentially to prevent trains from colliding. Control Room operates and monitor the train operations. So, Control Room can be considered as the nerve center of the division. The movement of scheduled and unscheduled trains are monitored using computer aided interface.

EXCHANGE
Exchange act as a switch for setting communication between different users. Exchange consist of Electronic components. In older system, humans operates the subscriber lines manually. The telephone exchange is located in central office (CO).

PASSENGER RESERVATION SYSTEM


In Indian Railways, reservation system can be characterized in two types, i.e. , Passenger Reservation system and Unreserved Ticketing system. Statues of Reservation is either conveyed via public telephone lines or on internet.

COMPARISION BETWEEN PRS & UTS


PRS Reserved travel by IR is facilitated by the PSR. The PRS application CONCERT is worlds largest online reservation application,. The system currently operates from 5 data centers. There must be proper connection between different stations. UTS An Unreserved ticket authorizes journeys but, as the name implies, offers no reserve seats. The ticket is not specific to a train service either. This facility is predominantly used by commuters and sub urban travelers.

Some reservation facts


The places where connectivity is not possible through BSNL or RailTel towers, 6-quad copper cables are used. A Switch can have 24 ports or 24 terminals can be connected to it. For UTS, there must be a connectivity between 72 hours. For UTS, L-3 switches are used.
