Sir Hugh Beaver, manager of the Guinness Brewery, went hunting with some friends on November 10 1951 and they got into a disagreement about the fastest game bird in Europe and could not find the answer anywhere. The lack of information for settling bar bets gave Sir Hugh Beaver an idea and the Guinness Book of Records was conceived with the first issue, a 198 page promotion book, being published on August 27, 1955.
2000 as The Guinness Book of Records is a reference book published annually, containing a collection of world records, both human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. The book itself holds a world record, as the best-selling copyrighted book series of all time. It is also one of the most frequently stolen books from public libraries in the United States.
