All of Us - #535
Fr. Larry Just Three Words
Our parish theme for Lent this year is just three words, Return. Repent. Believe. It is a simple message that is easy to remember. But, if we actually take these words to heart, we may face a daunting challenge these next several weeks. These three words are rooted in the scripture stories that we will hear proclaimed at Mass these next few weeks. For example, in todays gospel we watch what happens when Jesus comes out of the desert after spending days in quiet prayer and reflection. He quickly starts preaching to the people. His message is blunt and clear, The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel. In the Lenten readings we also witness people accepting Jesus invitation to return to a loving relationship with God. We watch people be forgiven of their sins and find new life, hope and direction. People who were once filled with doubt and uncertainty now have their faith restored. This Lent, how might we become part of this ongoing story of conversion? As we travel through these forty days, committed to praying, fasting and charitable outreach towards the poor and those in need, how will these familiar and traditional practices bring us closer to our Risen Lord? Return. Repent. Believe. Congratulations Jessica and Linda Last weekend at the 12:00 PM Mass we celebrated the Rite of Election for our two candidates in our (RCIA) Rite of Christian Initiation Program. The Rite of Initiation formally acknowledges the journey of faith that they have taken in the past several months. They have learned about the history, teachings, and traditions of the Catholic
Church. Both Linda Pachl and Jessica Finocchio have written their names into the Book of Elect as a sign of their willingness and desire to be fully initiated into the Catholic faith by receiving the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. Included in my column are reflections from Jessica and Linda; please keep them in your prayers. We are excited for them. Can You Help? In todays bulletin there is a direct appeal for help. You will find information about certain areas of parish life where there is a real need for volunteers. Listed are about ten specific ministries. Maybe there is something for you? Dont be shy. We will assist, train and prepare you along the way. Please give it some serious thought. Pray over the various opportunities to serve or volunteer. Our parish needs your time and talent. What is the gift you have to offer? Review of Priestly Ministry I would like to share with you an important letter that I received from the Office of Ministerial Evaluations of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Dear Parishioners, Your Pastor, Fr. Larry Lisowski, is participating in the Periodic Review of Priestly Ministry as required by the Archdiocese of Chicago Policy. Each priest is reviewed approximately every five years. The process was designed by the staff of the Office of Ministerial Evaluation, in consultation with Cardinal George, the Episcopal Vicars, members of the Priest Placement Board, and priests currently serving in local parishes. Fr. Larry Lisowski, the parish staff and parish leaders have generated lists of parishioners who will be asked to participate in the process by completing a Survey Form. If you do not receive a Form and would like to participate, please contact Kathleen Leggas, Director of the Office of Ministerial Evaluation, to request a Survey be sent to you. You may call 312-534-5265 or make a request by e-mail to [email protected]. Electronic forms are not currently available however. Information that you provide, including written comments, will be treated confidentially. At the completion of the Review Process, an overview of the results will be published in the Parish Bulletin. Above all, this in an important opportunity for you to express gratitude for all that he has accomplished and to offer

helpful suggestions regarding directions for future ministry for him and your parish. Thank you for your willingness to provide constructive comments regarding what you value and what you identify as areas for growth. Sincerely, Kathleen Leggdas, Director Office of Ministerial Evaluation Welcome Fr. Mike Foley We are happy to have with us this weekend, Fr. Mike Foley who will be celebrating the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday. Fr. Mike is currently the Associate Pastor at St. Michaels Parish in Orland Park. He is visiting our parish this weekend as a way of introduction and preparation for the three day Tri-Parish Lenten Mission that starts next Monday at St. Patricks Church, here in Lemont. I hope you will be able to make it to at least one of the evening presentations. Todays bulletin contains the details for what will happen every day. Hey, its Lent! Check it out. Grab a Bag Note that throughout Lent we will be collecting food for the Helping Hands food pantry. Grocery bags are available in the back of church to help you remember to make a donation. The bags can be returned to church on Sunday or to the rectory during the week.
Linda Pachl
Hi. My name is Linda Pachl. I was raised Methodist. I am married to Paul Pachl and we have three children ages 25, 8 and 6. We also have three grandchildren. Paul was raised Catholic and we decided to raise our two youngest children Catholic. They now go to SS. Cyril & Methodius School. I decided to join the RCIA program to learn more about the Catholic faith. I wanted to learn the faith with my two sons and be able to practice our faith as a family. The RCIA program is an amazing and wonderful program. It has taught me a lot about the Catholic faith and the staff are beautiful and genuine people. They make you feel so comfortable and welcome. It has been a great learning experience. I look forward to celebrating my faith in unity with my family.
Jessica Finocchio
Hi, my name is Jessica Finocchio. I was baptized as a baby, but never went any further with the Catholic religion. I decided to join the RCIA program because I want to be part of something bigger than myself. I also want my children to experience the joy and love of the Catholic Church. I absolutely love being part of the RCIA program. I feel like I am learning so much about God and myself. I teach 4th grade, so I love going home every Monday night saying I learned something new! This November, I will have the privilege of marrying my best friend, Nick, at St. Cyrils. I am so excited to make this special Sacrament in the eyes of God as a confirmed and devoted Catholic. Thank you so much for accepting me with open arms into such an amazing parish!

Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The religious education program will be participating in prayer experiences during Lent in their classrooms. They are also participating in Operation Rice Bowl along with the parish school children. Below are the answers to some frequently asked questions about Lent: Why do we have the season of Lent? We have Lent because people are preparing to be baptized at the Easter Vigil and these last 40 days of their preparation before Easter are so intense that we as a community journey with them and prepare to renew our own baptism. Why is Lent 40 days? Lent is 40 days because 40 is a biblically symbolic number: the Israelites wandered the desert for 40 years, Jesus was tempted in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights, 40 symbolizes a significant amount of time during which ones faith is tested and strengthened. Why is purple the color of Lent? Purple is associated with mourning and sorrow and during Lent we recall the suffering and death of Jesus. Purple is also the color of royalty and through the death and Resurrection of Jesus, we come to recognize him as our King.

Next week the students in Grades 3-7 will be taking the Terra Nova standardized tests. These tests can help parents see the growth of their child from year to year. It can also help our school to identify its strengths and weaknesses as we begin to plan for the upcoming school year. Since each grades test is based on the skills and concepts covered during an entire year, you really cant study for it. But there are things parents can do to help their child be well prepared for the testing process. First of all, make sure your child gets a good nights sleep and eats a good breakfast. Both of these factors can have a positive effect on how a child performs in school. Make sure your child comes to school with extra sharpened #2 pencils along with a good eraser. Encourage your child to listen carefully to all of the directions and try their best! Testing has been scheduled for the mornings only; this is when most students are more focused and attentive. We anticipate receiving our scores sometime during the month of May. The scores are used by the teachers to see possible adjustments which might need to be made to our curriculum. They will be also shared with you as soon as possible.

Thank You to the 641 families who have supported our campaign with their pledge.
Thank you for your support this year to our Capital Campaign. We have completed the first phase of our project with the renovation and construction of much needed additional washrooms in the back of Church and Sacristy area. As well, two new Reconciliation rooms were constructed to provide a more reverent and sacred space to celebrate the Sacrament. Planning is now taking place to embark on the much larger second phase to begin in June of 2012 with the painting of the interior of our church. The good news is we are over halfway to our overall goal. The success of our campaign will enable our parish to continue our ministry and enhance our worship and prayer. Working together, we can met the needs of our parish community both today and for many years to come. Let us in faith, share our gift and care for our home.
Loving God, We thank You for the generous blessings You have bestowed upon Our Faith. May Your Spirit give us the vision to look into our hearts for inspiration, and in your honor, respond with our sacrifice, Our Gift. Help us as we care for this sacred and holy place, Our Home, where we come to offer you glory, praise and honor. Amen. Our Faith, Our Gift, Our Home Capital Campaign

PADS is an acronym for Public Action to Deliver Shelter. It is a series of facilities, mostly churches, which serve as a safe haven one night per week for homeless men, women and children. St. Lukes Orthodox Church is the Monday night shelter we support. The churches in Lemont cover all the needs on the first Monday of each month, October through April. But St. Lukes is finding it more and more difficult to find people to cover the other Mondays during the month. The shift times are: 7-11PM, 11PM-3AM, 3-7AM and 5-8AM. The work is simple and it is wonderful to develop relationships with the guests. If you could give only one shift from now until the end of April, it would be a big help to St. Lukes. Please seriously consider this. If you are interested, call me at 630.257.2414 or email at [email protected] and I will put you in touch with the proper people. Thanks so much.

Volunteer for a SS. Cyril & Methodius Ministry
As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another 1 Peter 4:8-11
Below are descriptions of ministries in areas of our parish life which have the biggest need for your gifts and talents:
Art & Environment
Decorates the church and gym for Christmas and Easter and takes care of flowers and other liturgical symbols in church throughout the year. There are many opportunities to volunteer in this Ministry depending on ones availability. Choirs, Cantors and Instrumentalists, we have a place for everyone to share their musical gifts with God and our community. Most choirs rehearse weekly for an hour. Cantors are song leaders who lead the congregation in singing music for each Mass and rehearse twice a month. Cantors can sing at Masses as little or as often as they like. Other rehearsals are scheduled as needed. Our religious education program focuses on the need for students to embrace Jesus in their lives, speak about the faith they share and relate to one another so that the Word of God is always present with them. We need catechists, catechist aides and crossing guards for the upcoming school year. Classes are held on a weekly basis for an hour and a half from September until mid-April. The benefits of sharing your faith with the children of our parish are enormous. Your response now will help us prepare for the next session. The Board of Specified Jurisdiction (BSJ) is designed to cooperate and collaborate with the Pastor and principal to support the work of administering and leading the school. It is composed of a variety of committees which meet on a regular basis. The focus of each committee is to help identify and address school needs and goals. Programs and activities for the youth of the three Lemont Parishes (SS. Cyril & Methodius, St. Alphonsus and St. Patrick) are created to involve 13- to 17-year olds in parish life and continued spiritual growth. Outings, day trips, sports, scripture study and contemporary Masses are just a few of the activities sponsored throughout the year. Parents and chaperones are needed for these various events and projects. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is a program for adults interested in becoming Catholic. The role of a sponsor is to act as a guide or friend during class and around the parish. The sponsor attends the Monday evening sessions with the candidate, as they feel comfortable. It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the Church and welcome new members. Your response now will help us prepare for the next session. Involves planning the funeral liturgy with the family and/or serving as a sacristan for the Funeral Mass. Distribute Holy Communion (bread and wine) at Mass. Prior to becoming a Communion Minister, training is required by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Upon completion of training, the person is then commissioned at Mass and given a certificate from the Archdiocese. Communion ministers usually serve about once a month. Proclaim the Word of God at Mass and for Prayer Services and also offer the Prayers of the Faithful when a deacon is not present. Upon completion of a mandatory training program, the person is commissioned as a lector and is usually scheduled once a month. Assist parishioners upon arrival at church and help with seating during crowded liturgies. Ushers guide the faithful in an orderly manner to receive Holy Communion and they also take up the collection. Sunday sacristans help before and after Mass to prepare the liturgical items and vessels used at our Sunday liturgies. As a wedding sacristan, youll explain the wedding liturgy and practice the marriage ceremony with the bridal party, prepare our sacred space for the celebration of Mass and assist families on the day of the wedding. The rectory occasionally needs help with various office functions; Saturday receptionists, bulk mailings, bulletin and envelope stuffing.

All Teens Welcome.
Coleen will share with us how to live, share and defend the choice to be pure. Note to Parents: This is a great way to get the abstinence and chastity message to your child without embracing them.
