INDRODUCTION
Bioplastics are a class of plastics derived from
renewable biomass sources, such as plants,
agricultural waste, or microorganisms. Unlike
traditional plastics, which are synthesized from
fossil fuels, bioplastics offer a more sustainable
and environmentally friendly alternative.

5
What are Bioplastics
Bioplastics are a fascinating and eco-friendly
alternative to traditional plastics. They are derived
from renewable biomass sources, such as vegetable
fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, sawdust,
and recycled food waste. Unlike conventional plastics,
which are made from petroleum, bioplastics can
reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and decrease
greenhouse gas emissions.

6
Advantages of
Bioplastics
Reduced Environmental Impact: Bioplastics have a
lower carbon footprint compared to traditional
plastics, as they utilize renewable resources and often
decompose more readily.
Renewable Resource: By utilizing biomass,
bioplastics help reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Biodegradability: Many bioplastics are
biodegradable, breaking down into natural
components under specific conditions, thereby
reducing plastic waste in landfills.
Versatile Applications: Bioplastics can be used in a
wide range of applications, including packaging,
agriculture, and automotive components.

7
Disadvantages of
Bioplastics
Higher Production Cost: Currently, the production
of bioplastics is generally more expensive than
traditional plastics, making them less cost-effective.
Limited Availability: Bioplastics are not as widely
available as traditional plastics, limiting their use in
some applications.
Performance Limitations: In some cases,
bioplastics may not possess the same level of
durability and performance as traditional plastics,
especially in demanding applications.
Environmental Impact of Production: The
cultivation of crops for bioplastics can have
environmental impacts, such as deforestation and
water usage.

EXPERIMENT
AIM:-
To prepare bio plastic from corn starch .

APPARATUS:-
Cornstarch[corn flour], Glycerin[Glycerol],
Vinegar[5-6%],measuring cup, water,
utensils, spatula, aluminum foil, electronic
weight balance.

THEORY
Corn starch
 An organic polymer.
 It is a polysaccharide compound with α-D-
glucose monomer joined in α-1,4 lineage
[glycoside bonds].
 Chemical formula of starch -->[C6H10O5]n
 Chemical formula of corn starch
9
-->[C27H48O20].
 It is made up of 73% amylopectin and 27% of
amylose.
Glycerin
 It is a simple polyol compound.
 It is a viscus liquid and non-toxic.
 Glycerin is commercial grade and glycerol is the
pure form [propane-1,2,3-triol].
 It is used as the plasterer as it makes the bio
plastic more flexible.
Acetic acid
 It is an acid with low concentration.
 This whole process comes under esterification
reaction, we need an acid to complete the
reaction
Reaction:

PROCEDURE
10
1. Take a clean utensil.
2. Add about 30g of corn starch powder into utensil.
3. Add about 120ml of water and mix it
thoroughly without making any blobs.
4. Add 40 ml of both glycerin and water to the
mixture and mix well.
5. Heat the whole thing for 2-3 minutes low
Flame.
6. While heating, stir it continuously.
7. Once the mixture turns into a gooey slimy
texture, instantly pour it on the foil sheet.
8. With a flat spatula spread evenly through
the foil.
9. Keep it untouched for 2-8 days.
10. After it is set, peel the foil and examine it

OBSERVATION
11
1. From the experiment, the home-made bio
plastic almost looks like real plastic.
2. Fairly durable
3. Degrades in water within few days
4. Same happens when put under soil

RESULT
From the experiment, we have made fairly looking,
quite durable bio-plastic from corn starch

CONCLUSION
Bioplastics offer a promising alternative to traditional
plastics, with the potential to reduce our reliance on
fossil fuels and decrease environmental pollution.
Derived from renewable resources, they can be
biodegradable or non-biodegradable, each with its
own set of applications and benefits. While bioplastics
present a more sustainable option, challenges such as
production costs, performance, and recycling
infrastructure need to be addressed to fully realize
their potential. Overall, bioplastics represent a
significant step towards a greener future.
