Week 5: Computer Assembly

Task for the students:

List out the required components to build a simple computer system and create a
step-by-step guideline to assemble and dissemble a computer system.

Ans. In order to build a simple computer system, here are some important components:

• Cabinet/Case
• PSU
• CPU
• Motherboard
• RAM
• Storage devices (SSD, HDD)
• Adapter Card
• Monitor
• I/O devices (Keyboard and mouse)
• Tools (Anti-static mat, screwdriver etc.)

Prepare the workspace: There should be adequate lighting good ventilation and a
comfortable room temperature in the workspace. A antistatic mat should be used to
prevent electrostatic damage.

Assembling a computer:

Opening the case: Most of the computers are either opened from the top or side, the top
first and then from the side. The cases are mostly opened from one side only. Reading the
documentation required to open the case is very important so we can understand the type
and opening of the case.

Install the power supply unit: Before the installation of PSU (Power Supply Unit) we need to
identify the correct side for installation, then insert PSU into the case. Allign the holes of
the power supply with holes in the case. Now, fit the power supply int the case using power
screws.
Install the CPU and Colling system: The CPU and cooling system should be installed int the
motherboard before the motherboard is placed in the computer case. CPU and
motherboard are highly sensitive to ESD. Following the markings on the CPU and
Motherboard to align and install the CPU. A Thermal compound should be applied on top of
the chipset.

Install RAM: Check whether the RAM slot is unlocked or unlock if they aren’t unlocked yet.
Then carefully place the RAM in one specific direction. Always check the markings before
applying pressure to place the RAM in motherboard.

Install Motherboard: Now the most important part is to properly place the motherboard in
case and use proper plastic standoff to avoid short circuits. Make sure that the I/O
connectors in the back of the case are aligned with the openings in the I/O of the monitor.

Install drives: The internal drivers are installed in empty bay. The size of the empty bay must
match the driver's sizes, and some space should be left for installation of multiple drivers.
In the case of HDD, the metal case should always face up to better heat dissipation.
Optical drive is then inserted and accessed from the front of the case.

Install adapter cards: These network cards commonly use PCI or PCIe expansion slots or
USB connectors. To install these cards an empty expansion slot and follow the
manufacturer's instructions properly. Installing a Video Adapter Card commonly uses PCI
AGP or PCIe expansion slots. It requires an external power supply in the form of 8 pin
connector. Make sure to leave space for future.

Install internal cables: Connect all the internal drives and case fans, 4 pin moles and 15 pin
SATA of hard drive connectors. Align proper connectors and gently press it against the other
end. Fans also need power and use a 3-pin or 4-pin connector.

Install Front panel cables: Now, plug the reset switch, power switch, HDD-LED, speaker
and power LED connectors into the motherboard, all label facing upwards.

Now screw the case and connect the external cable and boot the computer.

Disassembling a computer

Unplugging: Unplug the power cord from the PC and detach all the peripheral components

such as keyboard, mouse, monitor, headphones.

Open the case: Open the case of the computer based on the specific way mentioned in the
above process.

Disconnect all the Connectors: Connectors such as SATA power cable, motherboard, DATA
cable as well as SATA optical drive.

Remove the Fan: Remove the fan and cooling system from the PC.

Remove the power supply: The power supply which is connected with 20 pins and 4 pins
connected to the motherboard is removed.

Remove the HDD and Optical drive: Remove the SATA cable connecting to the HDD and
optical drive in the motherboard.

Remove the RAM: Detach the RAM from the RAM slots.

Remove the expansion slots: Remove the expansion slots from the motherboard.

Remove the motherboard: At the end remove all the cables connected to motherboard with
case and detach the motherboard from case.

NOTE: make sure your stepwise guide is understandable by your friend to take reference
from while assembling the computer system during the workshop class.
