Assembly
Please have the ears, arm, tail and the body (up to
Round 23) completed before assembling. The
instructions provided are suggestions—please feel
free to adjust to your liking!

1. Position the body so that the decreases made in

Round 6 are along the sides (narrow portion) of
A
the body (see Picture B where the ears/arms are
positioned along the side).
2. Position ears so that the last single crochet (the second
B
to last overall stitch in the round) in Round 7 of each
ear face each other (see Picture A). This is so that the
ears will be slightly tilted when you sew them on.
3. Sew ears along the top of the body (between Rounds
2-5 of the body). Using Round 4 of the body as a
reference, there should be roughly 7 stitches in
between the ears. You can also use the decreases in
Round 6 of the body to align the base of the ears.
4. Using the eye template (see Felt Template below), cut
out two white felt eyes. Sew them along the front of
the body (between Rounds 7-9) using white
embroidery thread (see Picture C). Make sure to center
them so that they are roughly aligned with the base of
the ears (see Picture B). Using Round 8 of the body as
a reference, there should be roughly 6 stitches in
between the eyes.
5. Position the button eyes slightly lower and toward the
center of the face, leaving a small outer rim of
felt exposed. Sew the button eyes using black
embroidery thread (see Picture C).
C
6. Use the black yarn to sew a horizontal line
between the eyes at the bottom of Round 8
(see Picture C). I sewed about ¼ inch but the
length will vary depending on how big your
Totoro is. I sewed this twice to make the nose slightly
thicker.
7. Position the arms so that the last three single crochets
D
in Round 3 of each arm make up the bottom of the
arm (see Picture D).
8. Sew arms along the sides of the body (between
Rounds 10-12). Looking from the top of the Totoro,
each arm should be roughly aligned to the
corresponding ear (see Picture B).

9. Using the tummy template (see Felt

Template below), cut out one white felt
tummy. Sew it along the front of the
body (between Rounds 10-23, see
Picture E).
10. Use the blue yarn to sew three Λ’s on the
tummy. Center the middle one so that
the tip of the Λ is aligned with the nose.
11. Sew the tail to the back (along Rounds
17-20, see Picture F).
12. Stuff the body with polyfil and crochet
Rounds 24-25 before sewing the body
close (see Picture G).
